Description

This is a comprehensive, self-study workbook for learning Japanese characters. Mastering Japanese Kanji can help you greatly reduce the time and effort involved in learning to read Japanese and write Japanese. It does so by introducing a method that is both effective and easy to use in memorizing the meanings and pronunciations of Kanji–the array of characters that are used in the Japanese language to symbolize everything from abstract ideas to concrete nouns. Learning any of the kanji is a two-step process, requiring that you remember both the visual aspect of a character (so you can recognize it when you see it) and the aural aspect (so you will know how to say and, thus, read it). The method employed by Mastering Japanese Kanji will show you how to tackle both of these aspects from the outset, and by so doing enable you to immediately get down to the practical (and fun!) business of recognizing and reading kanji on everything from street signs to newspapers. By the time you finish this book, in fact, you will be able to boast of a Japanese vocabulary numbering in the thousands of words. Key features: Corresponding CD-ROM helps to reinforce the written materialTeaches the 200 most common kanji and the hundreds of compounds that use include them. Unique, specially-designed drawings and entertaining stories help you learn more quickly. Chapter and cumulative review exercises help ensure master of what you’ve learned. Complete indexes show Japanese readings and English meanings for all Kanji.Contents of the CD-ROM: Stroke order animations for all 200 kanji characters. User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “This book will likely be most useful for you if you are a beginner who is willing to work hard using the system provided as part of a holistic educational plan including all aspects of the Japanese language and will do outside readings to cement the knowledge acquired from the book.” –Japan Reference blog About the Author Glen Nolan Grant is an acclaimed translator of Japanese. He has traveled extensively, visiting over 60 countries and learning to speak six languages. He became attracted to the Japanese writing system while living in Japan, and after hearing that many consider Japanese to be the most difficult written language in the world, he took on the challenge of finding a way to make learning it easier. Tuttle Learning Japanese Kanji is the result of that challenge.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I checked this book out at the public library and found it to be so good that I had to get my own copy. Each kanji gets its own page with mnemonics, pronunciations, writing help, usages in both words and sentences, and of course meanings. It also has review exercises at the end of chapters. It is good for me and my self-study as well as reinforcement for my teenagers who are taking classes.

⭐I’ve been learning japanese for a while now, but in my class we’re required to use another book to study Kanji. However, I found it very hard to learn the kanjis so I bought this instead. It has been extremely helpful! I greatly recommend it.

⭐This book is wonderful and infotmative! It breaks down kanji in ways that help you to remember how to read it!!

⭐This book is very helpful, easy to understand examples and illustrations. However i don’t really like the stories cause it somehow a little stupid. But this book is still a good choice for the beginner who want to learn some basic kanji.

⭐The book is very pristine, no dings or dents, and .it came with a cd too. Very nice. Thank you 😀

⭐Thanks!

⭐It’s a good book for beginners!

⭐I am not a formal student, so I am learning a lot on my own. I learn best when I have a path to help me remember. I found this a very effective way to start learning kanji. I also see that this book covers only a few words, and for someone already studying Japanese, it may be frustrating because of that. (The list of kanji is short since each page is devoted to a single word.) But, as a first look at writing/reading kanji, I felt it was worth the price. It covers brush order, a memory cue, ways the word is used, definition of the word, etc.

⭐I have just finished working my way through this book, and can highly recommend it. Before buying it, I looked at a number of similar books, and bought this one based on the reviews and the information available. It has been a pleasure to use. You’re introduced to whole kanji and also to important “radicals”, which then reappear as you work through the book. The names for the radicals help you to remember them (i.e. superhero, gorilla, scarecrow – these will all make sense when you read the book!). The stories for remembering the kanji can be a little cheesy, but I think that makes them more memorable, and you can always make up your own if you want. The exercises at the end of each chapter are especially useful, and there is a test at the end which covers the whole book. I’ll only add that I got the most out of this book by making my own flashcards to use alongside it. I bought some little 6X4 inch record cards, and wrote the kanji on the front, whilst on the back I wrote the different ‘On-Yomi / Kun-Yomi’ pronunciations in two different columns along with common words which use the kanji. At the end of each chapter I went back over my flashcards for that chapter, and also reviewed the cards from the previous chapters. By the end of the book I now have 200 flashcards! – But I can now pick out any card from the pile and I can make a good attempt to say what the kanji means, and some of the ways to pronounce it. I highly recommend using this approach, or perhaps something similar which will help you supplement the book. To sum up: the book is excellent, and can really help you feel you are making headway with this most difficult part of learning the Japanese language.

⭐This is a wonderful book for a beginer of kanji. It’s well explained, the texts are easy to understand and there is also a online CD-Room available which can be valuable on writting kanjis and learning their pronouciation. I love this book.

⭐Il libro è arrivato nei tempi previsti e corrisponde alla descrizione.
