Description
From classical mechanics and classical electrodynamics to modern quantum mechanics many physical phenomena are formulated in terms of similar partial differential equations while boundary conditions determine the specifics of the problem. This 45th anniversary edition of the advanced book classic Mathematical Methods for Physics demonstrates how many physics problems resolve into similar inhomogeneous partial differential equations and the mathematical techniques for solving them. The text has three parts: Part I establishes solving the homogenous Laplace and Helmholtz equations in the three main coordinate systems, rectilinear, cylindrical, and spherical and develops the solution space for series solutions to the Sturm-Liouville equation, indicial relations, and the expansion of orthogonal functions including spherical harmonics and Fourier series, Bessel, and Spherical Bessel functions. Many examples with figures are provided including electrostatics, wave guides and resonant cavities, vibrations of membranes, heat flow, potential flow in fluids, and plane and spherical waves. In Part II the inhomogeneous equations are addressed where source terms are included for Poisson’s equation, the wave equation, and the diffusion equation. Coverage includes many examples from averaging approaches for electrostatics and magnetostatics, from Green function solutions for time independent and time dependent problems, and from integral equation methods. In Part III complex variable techniques are presented for solving integral equations involving Cauchy Residue theory, contour methods, analytic continuation, and transforming the contour; for addressing dispersion relations; for revisiting special functions in the complex plane; and for transforms in the complex plane including Green’s functions and Laplace transforms.Key Features:· Mathematical Methods for Physics creates a strong, solid anchor of learning and is useful for reference.· Lecture note style suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students to learn many techniques for solving partial differential equations with boundary conditions· Many examples across various subjects of physics in classical mechanics, classical electrodynamics, and quantum mechanics· Updated typesetting and layout for improved clarityThis book, in lecture note style with updated layout and typesetting, is suitable for advanced undergraduate, graduate students, and as a reference for researchers. It has been edited and carefully updated by Gary Powell.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: About the Author Henry William “Bill” Wyld was Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Wyld was a theoretical elementary particle physicist, gifted with an understanding that was imaginative, profound, and clear. In his early career, Wyld worked in low- and high-energy physics on weak interactions and several problems related to K-meson proton scattering. Wyld is particularly noted for his significant theoretical contributions related to the effects of the breakdown of quantum mechanical symmetry properties, written shortly after the discovery of parity violation in 1957, that presented detailed calculations of a number of effects to be expected. This work enabled various experimental groups to correlate and evaluate their results. Wyld took advantage of supercomputing capabilities as these were being developed to run large-data simulations; he always pushed for more computing power to answer fundamental problems.
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐The book content is exactly what I expected. But how the book arrived is bad at best. Some scuff marks on top of the pages. Plus the pages (see image) were so cockled the book opens an extra half-inch by itself. The resulting waves on the pages make the book nauseating to read. I ordered a replacement, so I’ll see what happens and update my review after I receive the new copy. Very disappointed.Update: I’ve received another copy and am again displeased with how it arrived. I shouldn’t pay $100 for a textbook and have to air dry and press it flat upon arrival. Aside from the new typesetting and edits, I wouldn’t purchase this again over the original which is $20 cheaper. I want to preface what I’m about to say next with the fact that the edits, typesetting, and layout are the makings of what (at least to me) would be the absolute go-to book for mathematical methods. But the actual quality of the book, not the text; but the book, in my possession is almost disgraceful. It is like the publisher maybe spent a quarter of what they should to print the book. The pages are so thin you can see everything on the following page without effort, the ink is so dull you’d wonder if they even used a professional print to actually put the letters on the page. I honestly get better printer resolution on my home printer! The font is so small that you can’t read it easily without straining your eyes too. It is so bad that if I wouldn’t have received two of them I would’ve thought I just had gotten unlucky. But since I have received two copies, it is shameful. I know for the future, I won’t be buying any books by the same publisher. Absolutely disgusting. It is like they took this carefully laid out book that was carefully edited by someone who clearly cared about the base text, and dumped on all of their effort by printing it so carelessly. The text is good enough that I’m not returning both of the copies, just one. All of this other crap, and then for the book to arrive from what was clearly an environment that was too humid to properly store books, absolutely insane. If you’ve ever imagined what it would be like for a publisher to ride the coattails of an author/editor so hard that they would just export the raw latex typesetting onto a pretty set of hardcover boards, this is it. I would gladly accept a copy that didn’t have these obviously lazy issues and retract these things, but it would have to be clear that they aren’t just applying a band-aid to a GLARING bunch of oversights.
