Description
Matrix Analysis for Scientists and Engineers provides a blend of undergraduate- and graduate-level topics in matrix theory and linear algebra that relieves instructors of the burden of reviewing such material in subsequent courses that depend heavily on the language of matrices. Consequently, the text provides an often-needed bridge between undergraduate-level matrix theory and linear algebra and the level of matrix analysis required for graduate-level study and research. The text is sufficiently compact that the material can be taught comfortably in a one-quarter or one-semester course. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the concept of matrix factorization to provide a foundation for a later course in numerical linear algebra. The author addresses connections to differential and difference equations as well as to linear system theory and encourages instructors to augment these examples with other applications of their own choosing.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review ‘I found Laub’s book a delightful read. It has become the sixth valuable ‘Matrix Analysis’ book on my shelves. As well as being admirably suited for the course at which it is aimed, its conciseness and clarity of presentation, together with the good index, make it easy to use for reference. The book is recommended both as a course text and as a handy guide to the subject.’ Nicholas J. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I received the book within a week of my order.Book was new and in good condition.Only packing was not that great causing the back cover to be slightly damaged.
⭐This book is excellent for fresh graduate students who may not come with a solid linear algebra background. It neatly covers the most important linear algebra knowledge that one would encounter in e.g. computer vision / graphics, such as SVD, pseudoinverse. It strikes a excellent balance between depth and coverage, giving the reader a reasonable level of understanding and a clear picture of the whole topic, while not being overwhelmed by excessive amount of proofs. I recommend it to every engineering grad students.
⭐It is difficult to write well, and it is difficult to write well with brevity. Professor Laub has produced a well-written and to-the-point book that is interesting to read and a pedagogical gift. After having worked over 80% of the exercises, it is clear his talents extend to creating interesting and useful problems. The texts by Meyer and Strang are excellent teaching texts and Laub has provided an excellent review text.Working through Meyer’s book in the matrix analysis was very helpful. Then working through Laub’s book brought a fresh perspectives and new clarity to the subject. With the skyrocketing price of books, this title is a rare bargain.
⭐This book has exactly what you need to know to understand tools in signal processing and data analysis based on matrix computation. There is nothing frivolous, which is something I really appreciate.
⭐A good review of the main topics in linear algebra. Succinct and to the point. It is good as a reference, but if you are looking for an introduction, please read Strang’s books on the topic.
⭐This book covers all the useful material that you probably didn’t get to in your first linear algebra course — pseudo inverses, SVD, etc. Moves quickly, but not too quickly. Good balance of theory and application.
