⭐This book is as relevant today as it was 60 years ago. It is almost impossible to imagine that Erich Fromm wrote this book in 1961. In it he destroys the myths that the Soviet Union was the evil empire and the US the shining savior of democracy. In it, he shows that both were far more similar than different and that they could and should find common cause. I grew up in the 60s and never once in the media, school or university came across these ideas and the facts from which Fromm drew these ideas. Of course, the Soviet Union now no longer exists and we have replaced that bugaboo with a new one “Putin’s Russia”. The names change but the song remains the same.
⭐As the Anniversary month of the Cuban missile crisis is now, October, this is a very key book assessing the unexamined, and often ‘hysterical’ lens though which each major country of the cold war, Russia, USA, China, viewed one another, and deserving now of a deep RE-READ, in this writer’s opinion, as he finds the book in the storage shed of the 1963 past, labeled with the name of wife – Anne Romaine – he met and married just a year plus later, so now reflects on the similarity of their readings at the time, both juniors/seniors in college. Fromm does a great job of exegesis of early Marx, and his humanism, and contrasts with the bureaucratic ‘socialism’ which was created according to him, by Stalin, and, in part before by Lenin. It is excellent on giving a brief background of the major ideological evolution of Marxist, Leninist, Stalinist, and Maoist thought up to the time of his writing in the early sixties, which was the context in which Khrushchev, Castro and Kennedy maneuvered the world into and out of a great threat of world destruction, an important theme now 50 plus years later, as we all await, (even the ‘conservative’ senators from Arizona, South Carolina, and Tennessee, ) how the US will play its ‘Trump card.’ HR
⭐This book is an essay about the foreign policy of the great powers and international joint in the final period of the “Cold War”. Expert psychoanalyst and psychological substrate attentive observer of political activity, not limited to establishing “the facts” of international politics. Separate “fact from fiction”, and shows how pathological forms of political thought and “resistance” (Freud) are obstacles that prevent proper understanding of political reality.Fromm examines and questions one by one, the assumptions on which the West bases its foreign policy. The USSR is characterized as a class society, not socialist and revolutionary, but conservative and deeply hegemonic. After examining the development of formerly colonial peoples of the Third World, the Chinese communist model and the rise of Germany in the global political and economic stage. Fromm reaches a triple conclusion: USSR and USA are condemned to understand themselves politically.”If we do not act soon – Fromm warns circumstances, institutions and weapons created by us and they will decide our destiny ”
