⭐Before reading this review, you should know that I (the reviewer here) am one of the editors of this book. My intent in writing this review is to describe the philosophy of what it contains and how we approach MCAT-level physics. This perspective will explain why our book is notably different than all of the other books on the market.What we set out to do with all of our books is to make self-contained modules where the reader gets organized content review, clever mnemonics, highly-effective problem solving techniques available no where else, realistic passages, a wide range of question difficulties, and most importantly thorough answer explanations that taught not only the answer to the question but also test-taking strategies to apply to future questions. We decided not to write a book that reviewed physics and threw a pile of equations at the reader, but rather taught a new, more organized way to deal with the large volume of information typically associated with physics classes. The beauty of much of the information in physics is that it is conceptual in nature and can be learned using common sense as your guide. As such, this book reviews science concepts in general and teaches you to look at the big picture and use your experience and logic more than memorization.We set out to make the very best physics book for the MCAT, and based on feedback, we succeeded quite well. It would make sense that we could do an MCAT preparation book better than anyone, because the only thing our company does is MCAT preparation. There are certainly other companies (large corporations) who produce MCAT books, but those are often modified SAT or LSAT books that present strategies and techniques that don’t carry over to the MCAT. You need more than a Cliff Notes version of a text book with some modified SAT or GRE strategies.So as far as this book (Physics Part I) goes, it is one of two in the physics series released by Berkeley Review. The two books are meant to work as a pair and although by itself Book I is good, it works better with its partner Part II book. The company website sells this book brand new and current for $[…] (two books cost $[…] including tax). The only place to get brand new Berkeley Review books is the company website, so all other books are used. You should consider this when looking at prices for used books. The 2008 version is the latest one available (although a 2009 version is in the works). The MCAT changed in 2007 to an exclusive CBT format, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that previous versions are outdated. The 2003 printing is still useful (and better than the mass marketed MCAT books), because physics content on the MCAT has been consistent for years. Books prior to 2007 may not have the CBT tips of later books, but they have many test-taking insights that still apply.The best part of this book is the unique way it looks at solving kinematics questions, force diagram questions, pendumlum questions, and momentum questions. We set forth to make the passages, questions, and most of all answer explanations are by far the best available for MCAT preparation. We take incredible pride in the answer explanations. Most of your learning occurs when you review the answer explanations to the practice questions, so this is an area where you should focus. So many books on the market skimp when it comes to answer explanations, which is the main reason why the Berkeley Review books are better than the others on the market.
