Description
This text is intended as the basis for an intermediate course in mechanics at the undergraduate level. Such a course, as essential preparation for advanced work in physics, has several major objectives. It must develop in the student a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of mechanics. It should treat in detail certain specific problems of primary importance in physics, for example, the harmonic oscillator and the motion of a particle under a central force.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Before Goldstein and Marion, there were Fowles and Symon. If Goldstein is a nightmare, then Symons can prove to fill in alot of gaps. Topics are well covered and many example problems are given. Not as complete as Marion, but just as valuable. Symon contains alot of “old school” skills which prove to be very valuable. It’s a shame that it takes Fowles, Symon, and Marion to get you through Goldstein, but nevertheless, take a hint and stock up if you are to face the Goldstein book.
⭐This is a great book that covers essentially the same material, and at the same level, as Goldstein’s Classical Mechanics. Symon’s treatment of rigid body dynamics is a bit more detailed than Goldstein’s, and, in my opinion, somewhat clearer. The used copy that I bought was in good condition, and very reasonably priced. I highly recommend Symon’s book to be a permanent addition to an advanced physics student’s library.
⭐This book is really great at explaining the theory in a very approachable and understandable manner. The only thing I didn’t like was that there were very few examples to fully understand how the math is applied to the principles. Overall though I completely understand why this is often used as the default book for mechanics courses.
⭐Third edition was published the year I graduated college. While we used Fowles’ Analytical Mechanics and Goldstein for Sophomore & Junior year Mechanics @ The Cooper Union, Symon would have been a suitable Junior year course as Goldstein is (was) often used for freshman graduate text (which we used at SUSB 1975).This review will remain incomplete until the book is well studied, but may be updated periodically as chapters are completed.
⭐Good
⭐came slightly damaged
⭐Decent mechanics test book for under graduates. Many problems for each chapter. Unfortunately many of the answers in the back of the book are are wrong. Very careless of the author.
⭐Not always clear, and a bit frustrating working out results that it states are obvious but really aren’t.
⭐The test is an advance Mechanics book that provides a lot of matherial very useful for the student, with detailed explanations.
⭐Very poor printing quality.
⭐great book. must read for all physics lover
⭐Excellent coverage of mechanics at intermediate level, to be consulted before making the transition to Goldstein.
⭐excellent mechanics book… thanks amazon
