Description

This edition contains all Milton’s English poems with the exception of Paradise Lost, together with translations and texts of all his Latin, Italian and Greek poems. Since its first publication in 1968 John Carey’s edition has established itself, together with Alastair Fowler’s Paradise Lost (also published by Longman) as the standard edition of Milton’s poetry for students and general readers alike. It has fuller explanatory notes than any other edition, and – a distinctive feature – a headnote to each poem to summarise the judgements and disagreements of modern critics. The headnotes of this updated Complete Shorter Poems concisely abstract some 700 articles and 70 books that, since 1968, have augmented the scholarly and critical debate about the greatest of England’s non-dramatic poets. The result is not just an edition but a clear succinct guide through the rich but bewildering profusion of modern Milton scholarship.

John Carey is Merton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford, and is acknowledged as one of the world’s leading Miltonists. He has written extensively on Milton’s life and poetry, and translated his treatise On Christian Doctrine for the Yale Complete Prose Works.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book compliments the Longman edition of Paradise Lost, and therefore gives one a complete set of Milton’s poems. This, along with the other book,is easy to ready because the poetry on each page is relatively short; footnotes serve to split the text and therefore make it easy to read. The book also contains an extensive bibliography of Milton scholarship, and since this book is out of print, Amazon is one of the only companies to offer brand new copies.

⭐The print quality is as awful as it gets. Some parts are completely illegible. It feels like I paid $50 for a pirated version of the book. Honestly, my home printer does a better job than whatever you people used to print this book.

⭐Excellent book. Only concern is the binding and the paper color, which is too birght when reading in the sunlight. Other than that, it’s an excellent piece of academic editing.

⭐All of Milton’s brilliant shorter poetry can be found in this comprehensive overview of everything except Paradise Lost. Longman’s Annotated Poets collections are superb because of their informative headnotes, extensive annotations, an attention to detail that includes placing each poem in its proper historical context, voluminous bibliographic information, illustrations of manuscripts and early editions of the poetry, and editors that strike me as obsessive sticklers for accuracy and completeness.I own all of the Longman’s Annotated Poets that are currently in print and I’ve been deeply impressed by each one. The two volumes devoted to Milton’s complete poetic output are particularly well regarded because both are edited by renowned Milton scholars. In the case of the volume devoted to Paradise Lost, the editor is Alastair Fowler. The shorter poems are edited by John Carey. The two comprise the finest collection of Milton’s sublime poetry currently available. Milton can be a difficult poet. His theological learning and knowledge of mythology was vast and always at his fingertips. That learning found its way into his poetry making for some difficulty for the modern reader, for whom this knowledge seems arcane and unapproachable. Having extensive headnotes for an introduction to a poem and then exhaustive annotations that appear unobtrusively on the same page makes the experience of reading Milton a pleasurable rather than a frustrating experience. If you’re not acquainted with Milton’s poetry or have been hesitant to read him because of his reputed difficulty, I strongly recommend you try the Longman’s Annotated Milton, the finest “one-two punch” collections of his poetry that are currently available.Milton’s shorter poems have a beauty and lyricism which he assiduously avoided as he composed Paradise Lost, which is a much more combative and aggressive poem. The scale of this epic poem is vast and the characters – especially Satan – are meant to be heroic in stature. The shorter poems have a more human scale and an intimacy that gives many of them a delicacy that may surprise you if you haven’t read them. Poems like Lycidas, L’Allegro and Il Penseroso are absolutely gorgeous in sentiment and in their use of language. The edition in which you read Milton really does matter if you wish to improve both your understanding and your appreciation for some of the most sublime poetry in English.

⭐I already have a copy of the companion volume of Paradise Lost edited by Alastair Fowler (2nd ed.) published by Longman. Although superficially this edition of the complete shorter poems (now published by Routledge) looks much the same, at closer examination it is a far inferior product. The paper is thinner, the covers are flimsy and it the type of binding used is less strong and durable. Looks like the new publisher is looking to cut costs but still charge for a superior product. I’ve returned it and will keep my eyes open for a second-hand copy of the Longman edition.

⭐The Longman series is the best help I have found in reading or teaching these classics.

⭐Disappointed by very faint ink. This flaw is common throughout the print run of this ‘revised’ second edition. Returned ‘revised’ copy and bought a second-hand copy of the (non-revised) second edition (1997) as the ink quality is perfect and it is the same book including notes (apart from having a different image on the cover). Also the second-hand copy was £0.01 instead of nearly £30.
