⭐I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it is impossible to use the formatting of the chapters as a foundation to teach an advanced grammar or conversation course in level 3000+ Collegiate Portuguese. If you’ve had the basic Portuguese classes finished, than this book is an excellent source for independent study moving onward. It’s really a terrific product as it gives in depth analysis on formal Brazilian Portuguese writing and what is casually said in spoken situations down in Braziltoo.I am an undergraduate who already has another degree from 2007 as I returned specifically to learn Spanish & Portuguese. I unfortunately do not have the resources or means here in the US to enroll in upper level Portuguese classes due to lack of availability/my full-time work schedule. This however really is an excellent book content wise. I’m just disappointed that the superb content in this book does not have a friendly enough format for professors to teach a class as more opportunities to learn this great language could open up in the future.By the way, here are the two books I recommend before starting this book:1) Ponto de Encontro – Beginner/Intermediate Book (2007 version is better than the newer more $$ one)2) Para a Frente – Intermediate/Advanced Book with much better structuring than Modern Brazilian Portuguese.3) Modern Brazilian PortugueseAll can of course be purchased off Amazon.Great thanks to Amazon for getting this book to me in 2 days after ordering online!Ben

⭐I am teaching myself Portuguese, and this book has helped immensely! I started using it when I was at a lower intermediate level. Some basic knowledge of Portuguese grammar and construction is needed to use this book (I completed

⭐before I bought this grammar).I really love this book for a couple reasons:-Part A (traditional grammar layout) is concise and thorough.-Part B (topics more centered around communication) is GREAT for learning some new expressions and vocabulary!-There are notes next to any constructions/expressions/words that are colloquial and bookish/academic.-The chapters on verb tenses and aspect are very thorough and helpful. They even give insight to the differences between the spoken and written language (For example, in chapter 18.3.5: “The imperfect tense is very frequently used, especially in the spoken language, to replace the conditional tense.”).-Chapter 19 has lists of verbs organized by which prepositions they take when followed by an infinitive.-The layout of the book is very straightforward, clean, and user-friendly! There is enough space between each section to make notes if needed, too.All in all, I am THRILLED with this grammar. It’s by far the best resource for Portuguese on my shelf! I have just purchased

⭐(it looks just as promising!), and intend to buy other Routledge Modern Grammars for any languages I learn in the future. Really great series!

⭐The grammar part is concise but at the same time complete and extremely clear. The rules are well explained and presented in a way that makes easier to remember them and the examples are abundant and enlightening. It is very uncommon for a grammar to be such an enjoyable read. The second part is equally useful as it concentrates on the common usage and expressions, and – again – it is very rich, as it takes half of the book.Honestly, there is nothing I disliked about this grammar. Maybe it is not the best book to start studying Portuguese from scratch, unless one is already familiar with at least a couple of Romance languages, but otherwise it is probably the only Portuguese grammar one will ever need.

⭐I am an American who lived in Brasil from 1983 to 1993 and used to speak fluent Portuguese. I haven’t spoken much with Brazilians since then and decided to brush up a bit.I can’t say enough good things about this book. It is organized extremely well and covers pretty much everything you need to know to write or speak well either formally or colloquially. Also covers all the verb tenses and how and why to use them.I haven’t seen anything out there as good as this book. If you want to learn the real language as it is written and spoken in Brasil today, get this book. Boa sorte gente.

⭐Very detailed, a lot of grammar, a lot of examples, in summation, the content is excellent, however for the price of $129.20 the quality of the book is poor. The paper and the print is of very poor quality. So content, great, quality of the book, i.e., binding, paper quality, and print, very poor.

⭐I love how this book introduces you to the language. Very easy to use. I bought it along with the workbook. A must have for those wanting to learn and speak Portuguese fluently.

⭐One of the better Portuguese grammar books I have ever come across. I speak some Portuguese and had been asked by some friends to recommend a good book. Came across this one and ordered it. It is well laid out describes adequately the colloquialisms and when combined with a good verb book such as Barron’s 501 Portuguese Verbs and a good dictionary, it’s a winner.

⭐I’m a beginner to Portuguese and I found this book helpful for explanations of grammatical rules I had been following but were not aware of. It is clear and easy to follow. It teaches you how to express ideas/feeling/statements in different levels of formality, and gives examples of real life usages/exchanges in conversation to illustrate the proper grammar.

⭐extremely useful reference to grammar; I’m still learning so I cannot be the ultimate judge, but so far it’s been very helpful

⭐Excellent text. Very informative. So educational. I went from ok to fluent Speaker and reader and understanding with this text. .not exclusively alone. But explained grammar, word order, verbs, etc, in plain English.

⭐If you speak a little Portuguese and can ‘get by’, this book will help you take your language to the next level. Although clearly a grammer book and not an exciting read there will be lots of ‘Ahhh…that’s what that phrase/word means’ which will really help.

⭐Be warned this is a dense book, but as a compliment to structured you lessons and a reference you cannot have a better tool.

⭐Awesome book, easy to understand, from morphology to grammar, and accents and differences. Great book to have around as a complementary to conversational and exercise books
