Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I spent eight years teaching myself Portuguese and running a blog for Portuguese learners. I have read almost every grammar there is. This one is by far the best, if you are learning Brazilian dialect. It’s so good it actually makes me mad that other, far inferior grammars have more reviews. It’s so good I that I kept a copy of the first edition in my backpack as I travelled all around Brazil. Reasons I like this book:- Specific to Brazilian portuguese *as it is spoken*. A lot of portuguese grammars teach you an overly formal way of speaking that is nothing like how actual Brazilians speak. Others teach you forms that are more common in Portugal. This is one of only two grammars I know of that is specific to the colloquial Brazilian language.- The whole second half of the book is a ‘functional grammar’, meaning it is organized around the communications goal you are trying to achieve. So for example, there are chapters for ‘Seeking and giving permission’, ‘Expressing hope’, ‘Making requests’, ‘Apologizing and expressing forgiveness’, with each presenting a range of options in varying degrees of formality and style. I have used this part of the book *extensively* over the years, and even though I am mostly fluent, I still consult this section from time to time.- Accessible and friendly style. The only other grammar worth buying, by Mario Perini, is more oriented toward academics. This one is written in a modern, practical style that tries to anticipate where English (and now spanish) speakers will encounter confusion. The layout is clean and modern and invites casual perusal. I actually have learned a lot just flipping through the book.- Goes deep. For advanced students, there is a wealth of information about the subtle shades of meaning between e.g. different forms of the past tense, or when you might use ‘ir a’ vs. ‘ir em’ vs. ‘ir para’.Lastly, although this is meant to be a reference guide and not a textbook, there is a workbook available if you want to use it in a more systematic mode of study.

⭐I purchased this grammar book and the accompanying workbook. I feel like I got WAY more than what I paid for. In fact, this book is so packed with information that, at first, it seemed overwhelming. I confess that I had the book on the shelf for more than a year before I actually started working through it on a regular basis.Ultimately, I decided to review one chapter at a time, but did so out of order so it didn’t feel as daunting. I’ve now been through all of Part A (Structures) and I’m now working through Part B (Functions). Part A includes the grammar fundamentals and is more theoretical in approach, while Part B is the more practical piece that ties it all together with common expressions and communication strategies. Each chapter in Part A concludes with a “Note for Spanish Speakers” summarizing the main points and differences that we hispanohablantes should keep in mind. It also serves as a concise recap of the chapter. It is beyond impressive the amount of information the author has compiled and organized into a digestible format. I discuss the book frequently with my Brazilian Portuguese tutor and we often come across particular subtleties and nuances that he inherently understands but had never actually stopped to think about. The depth of the material, while often exhausting during the initial review, is excellent for reference purposes whenever I have a very specific question about how to say or express something correctly. In summary, I don’t think there’s any other book out there quite like this one. I wouldn’t have reached my current level of Portuguese nearly as quickly and efficiently without it. It will also serve as a reference book for years to come.

⭐Background. My company has operations in Brazil and it would be helpful for me to be functional in Portuguese. I started at ground zero without knowing how to say “Thank you”. I’m using a bunch of different systems (Rosetta, Pimsleur, Netflix, etc.). I have a long way to go, but am making progress. Now, where does this book fit it? It’s a fantastic reference to back up these other methods which often teach you to speak without knowing WHY you’re saying a particular word in a particular order. This book is NOT a step-by-step approach to learning Portuguese, but rather a comprehensive explanation of how the language works, i.e., conjugations, word order, conjunctions, differences between spoken and written, etc. With lots of handy tips, such as if your goal is just to be a functional speaker (versus a professional journalist or something), then focus on learning just present, imperfect, and past tense — don’t worry about the gazillion other tenses that Portuguese has. The author is clearly an expert and makes interesting points such as “Future tense is rarely used in the spoken language, and is instead substituted with . . . .”. Use this book in conjunction with other learning efforts. In short, no matter what stage of fluency you’re at, this book is an indispensable reference to add to your other efforts.

⭐A very complete book. He covers a wide range of spoken and written Portuguese in great detail. It’s kind of overwhelming but there is also a workbook that helps reinforce things. I’ve learned a lot of new words and expressions too.

⭐This book is very good! I’m still a beginner in Portuguese! Once I’m more familiar with Portuguese grammar I’ll use it! I know that this book will help me when that time comes!

⭐This could have been better if the author would do something more for the past tenses for the verbs.

⭐If you want a grammar book, this is the one.

⭐By far the best book I’ve encountered on Grammar for Portuguese. It is clearly laid out in well-detailed sections with fine examples of how each specific element of a grammar detail would function. Highly recommend.

⭐I gave this book one star only because this book is not for me. Everybody learns differently but for me i find it difficult to learn from this book. I have many why this, why that, why this way type of questions which i could not find an answer. For me who is a beginner i learned i need personal tutoring to go through grammar and the Portuguese language with me in order for me to ask questions and make sense out of things as the Portuguese grammar is different to English and sentences are constructed differently. When i am at an intermediate level then i will read this book for help as many of my questions would have been dealt with in my beginners stage of learning.i would refer to to this book or feel comfortable to refer this book to somebody who is at an intermediate level

⭐Excellent reference work for Brazilian Portuguese. I especially like how it contains two sections; the first a traditional grammar’s layout broken down by grammatical category, the second is a functional/situational layout. Highly recommend for serious students or language/grammar nerds. If you’re just playing around with Portuguese or easily scared off by grammatical terminology, maybe give it a miss and buy something more introductory.

⭐Probably the best grammar book I’ve ever used in any foreign language. It’s packed with interesting and useful information. If you’re studying Brazilian Portuguese, buy it!

⭐I have been learning to speak Brazilian Portuguese, but have been struggling with the grammar. This definitely helps me.

⭐good book and good service thank you
