Description
Molecules and Medicine provides, for the first time ever, a completely integrated look at chemistry, biology, drug discovery, and medicine. It delves into the discovery, application, and mode of action of more than one hundred of the most significant molecules in use in modern medicine. Opening sections of the book provide a unique, clear, and concise introduction, which enables readers to understand chemical formulas.

⭐Bought a hard copy several years ago and have found it very useful so also bought this for my ipad/kindle, June 2014. The text is written by Corey’s team (nobel prize winner 1990?)The Kindle edition has a few typos in it that are not there in the paperback – a shame b/c John Wiley could have created the Kindle edition without the typos creeping in, given that the text already exists in an electronic format and typo free. An example “Drugs Acting on the Nervoes System”This book is broken down into therapeutic areas (TAs). If you are new to drug discovery some of TAs have a brief primer on the underlying biology, which is helpful. The level of detail is good – a history of the molecule, mechanism of action, and the key features of its chemistry. The structures are nicely done and some basic reactions and mechanisms are shown. The electronic version does not have any smiles format for the structures. The references are useful if you want to drill down further. The kindle version has links in the references but they don’t really take you to the journal – maybe one day they will :-)For someone interested in medicine and how drugs are created, without any science background at all, will have a tough time working through the text which is technical. A basic understanding of pharmacology will really help because while the book is technical, it is very readable and an excellent primer on the history of medicinal molecules! I also think for anyone taking these medications for chronic conditions this should be required reading – okay okay – a stretch goal!!Hey Corey et al, have the publishers fix the typos!
⭐This is a book for anyone with a little background in chemistry to a lot who is interested in how submicroscopic entities, molecules, are biologically active and are being used as medicine. The first chapter on chemical bonding and molecular structural formulas gives a good introduction or review for students. The rest of the book focuses on the molecules that constitute modern pharmaceuticals, their structure and activity. The book is organized to make it easy to find medicinal molecules based on there uses. The writing is concise and informative, and the illustrations are excellent. I recommend this book to students interested in medical fields and anyone interested in the molecular aspect of popular medicines. A truly excellent book!
⭐There are not that many books that try to popularize the science behind drugs, so I applaud the authors for trying. It’s not even a bad book, if you have some science background.
⭐amazing book
⭐This is an excellent production. Well writen and illustrated. My only criticism is that the one page allotted to most of the molecules in the book is a little skimpy – at least for a chemist. Otherwise I think it is an excellent introduction for those with some chemistry background and certainly for undergraduate chemistry majors or even the better premeds.
⭐Is an excellent text book with valuable contribution to organic chemistry and their apply in medical issues. I recommend this book as a text guide for professionals in this area.
⭐Straight forward, “what you need to know” type textbook. Well written and very informative. All of the pictures used are useful and not there to just make things look pretty.
⭐”Molecules and Medicine” is a great little book, especially for those interested in how drugs work at the molecular level. I read the hardbound 2007 version. Each section covers a drug category, such as immunosuppressive agents or antibiotics. After the section introduction, each page in the section covers one drug. The book also has an overall intro section, basically a primer on organic chemistry and proteins. The approach is molecular, and is quite insightful and useful. It shows and discusses how the drugs actually work, at the molecular level. Illustrations clearly show how the drug reacts with the particular enzyme or other molecule it affects. You need some background to get the most out of this book. But I think it would be interesting for just about anyone to browse through. The authors intentionally wrote the book to appeal to a broad audience, and I think they largely succeeded.
⭐The book is very interesting and the kindle version is identical as the paper version BUT in the kindle version we don’t have the indication of the pages of the book (we do have the location). Very often we have indication of page to consult and because we only have the location, as a kindle reader, we don’t know what pages the author is originaly talking about !!!! So the Kindle version need improvement: mean location AND PAGES have to be indicated for a better reading !!!
⭐Introductions into the biology of the symptoms and diseases to be treated are given at the beginning of each section. Individual drugs are described in a more or less one-page format with chemical structure, discovery/history and a basic explanation of the cellular processes affected. This book is a must-have for anyone working in the biomedical field and passionate hypochondriacs 😉
⭐The text is easy to read and above all, the text is interesting. I enjoy how the molecules are ordered with respect to their effects on the body and the resulting pathways that are effected by the moieties.
⭐good quality and good book
⭐この本は病気の解説、それに対する医薬品の開発の歴史、化学構造、生体内作用機構、医薬品の代謝、類似医薬品等々が非常にコンパクトにまとめられ、英語も非常に読みやすい。よく似た本に”Molecules that Changed the World”があるが、大学4年生、大学院学生が使うには”Molecules and Medicine”の方がずっと優れている。薬学、合成化学関係の学生にお勧めの1冊。
