User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is a charming and mostly forgotten book. When I was little, I read the first chapter, which was excerpted in a British collection of children’s stories, and I loved it. Running across it again as an adult, I realized there was more to read and I sought out the book. It didn’t disappoint; in fact, it was superb, as fun and interesting as a Roald Dahl– and that’s high praise from me. Quentin Blake, who illustrated many of Roald Dahl’s books, also did the drawings here, and while I’ve never much liked his work, his Pompey the dragon is pretty cute. JS Haldane was a well-respected scientist in his day, and the fantastical elements in his children’s book are often accompanied by real scientific data, which gives the tale a nice tone of matter of fact-ness, despite its magical storyline. If you like Roald Dahl and CS Lewis’s children’s books, you’ll enjoy this one.

⭐This is a terrific read, fun and funny. Mr. Leakey is a wizard. There are three stories that deal with him and his adventures and they make up the bulk of the book. In addition there are three other stories that are magical or fanciful in nature. The writing is superb. There is an inspired wit and brilliant imagination at work here. Mr. Leakey puts me in mind of Prof. Sherman from The Twenty-One Balloons – both characters are larger than life (though Prof. Sherman is more of an inventor and adventurer). I thoroughly enjoyed this. I would think that it would appeal to anyone who likes Roald Dahl. This is a classic for good reason.

⭐Long time to get here but did NOT disappoint. This children’s book is the very play book that seriously molded global events. Encrypted with Intel, it was never for kids at all.Thank you for my treasure!

⭐One of my favorite books as a child.

⭐One of my all-time favorite books. Delightful language and imagery, extraordinary invention.

⭐Really pretty sickening when so many dont realize its not a childrens book and its talkung in codes and its our future of how the sick government and evil ppl has being doing things behind sceens. Wake up ppl. Reread. They used this book to also program n groom their children

⭐This book is a light but well-thought out fantasy of the old-fashioned British sort. Mr. Leakey is a magician in “modern” (1920s) England. His friend, the narrator, has a dry sense of humor (as does the author, of course!).An example of the thoughtfulness of the fantasy world-building is that the little dragon had asbestos boots so as not to burn the wooden floor!

⭐This was probably my favourite book when I was little. I can’t imagine how many times I’ve read it- for me, the perfect blend of reality and fantasy. It’s also very funny and neatly written- by J.B.S. Haldane, a leading authority on genetics in his time, and a very famous scientist indeed. There are 6 stories in the book- A Meal With A Magician, A Day in the Life of a Magician, Mr Leakey’s Party, Rats, The Snake With the Golden Teeth, My Magic Collar Stud. If you buy any of the later editions, it’ll be illustrated by Quentin Blake. The whole tone of the writing is confiding and breezy, with the author taking the craziest things perfectly in stride- a very calm, English attitude, and the settings are slightly quaint-seeming now, but again, very English and of their time. It nails perfectly the knack of referring to things that may be over the readers head without confusing them, so although there are some allusions in there you might not understand until you’re older, it never spoils the story. It’s also very short, which is a shame, as to my knowledge it’s the only fiction Mr Haldane ever wrote. A must-read, though.

⭐A great little story book written by a very eminent scientist for children. It’s one of the books that my wife keeps referring to so I thought that I had better read it. Passing it on to grandson next

⭐I’d completely forgotten the existence of this book, which I read as a child. But I came across the name of J B S Haldane the other day, remembered he’d written a children’s book so did the usual internet search. When I saw the title I could remember how I’d loved it when I was 10-ish. So, now I have it again and it seems better than ever. Mr Leakey the magician is quite a character and the new illustrations are perfectly judged. Suitable for children from 8 to 80.

⭐I was so glad to find this classic story still available. I remember it vividly from back in the early 1960s, when I read it over and again many times. It was great to read it now, and find that I still remembered what happened. My special favourite was the rubber-toothed dog … Mr Leakey deserves to bring joy to many more kids, young and old.

⭐Entirely charming – almost too good for kids.
