Description

Meet Oswald Hendryks Cornelius, Roald Dahl’s most disgraceful and extraordinary character . . . Aside from being thoroughly debauched, strikingly attractive and astonishingly wealthy, Uncle Oswald was the greatest bounder, bon vivant and fornicator of all time. In this instalment of his scorchingly frank memoirs he tells of his early career and erotic education at the hands of a number of enthusiastic teachers, of discovering the invigorating properties of the Sudanese Blister Beetle, and of the gorgeous Yasmin Howcomely, his electrifying partner in a most unusual series of thefts . . . ‘Raunchy and cheeky entertainment’ Sunday Express ‘Immense fun’ Daily Telegraph Roald Dahl, the brilliant and worldwide acclaimed author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and many more classics for children, also wrote scores of short stories for adults. These delightfully disturbing tales have often been filmed and were most recently the inspiration for the West End play, Roald Dahl’s Twisted Tales by Jeremy Dyson. Roald Dahl’s stories continue to make readers shiver today.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A Roald Dahl classic with very nice descriptions and enjoyable imageries. The story is a bit prolonged as the main point was to know how Oswald became that rich.

⭐I’ve always known Roald Dahl as a children’s author but it appears he published a significant number of adult stories and novels as well. This is one of the latter. A quick glance at one book blurb had me thinking I was in for a bit of smut, but I wasn’t. Dahl’s narrative device is to excerpt from the diary of the narrator’s rich uncle.A character featured throughout describes one of the antics she’s been enlisted for as, “…a bit of a lark.” And that is exactly what this book feels like. The narrator disappears almost immediately and we’re off into the tale of how the uncle got rich. It seems like an unduly lengthy diary entry but no matter. And it seems the way he ultimately did get rich might have transpired more directly but, again, no matter. The lark is the point.Dahl just seems to have wanted to fiddle about with a sex-soaked romp through some of the best and brightest of the twentieth century, from intellectual and artistic royalty to actual royalty. As you might expect, he favors the former over the latter. And he handles the sex mostly euphemistically so the book never trips into the gutter. There’s really not much here but it’s mildly amusing and a quick read.

⭐Always knew Dahl as a children’s author but this book is adult in content. Very funny and written with that usual Dahl style. Great price for a great read.

⭐Unless one is an Adams (Fester, I mean), one can hardly have a more interesting relative than Uncle Oswald. This book contains stories about Oswald getting out and about in the world, making his fortunes several times over. People he meets are fascinating in their own right, and his approach to matters is highly enjoyable. Oswald is unscrupulously devoted only to enjoying life as much as he can, and he seems to be able to enjoy quite a lot of it. Others have described the substance of the stories, but writing is Dahl at his best, a hugely entertaining read in one session (for instance, a longish flight). For two more stories about Oswald (both priceless but not a part of the narative of this book) pick up the Switch Bitch (a collection of four stories, the other two are also superb just not part of the Oswald series).

⭐The book is the readings of his diary telling of a specific event in his life. There isn’t a backstory of his “life” except for what prompted him to do what he did and why. The other characters weren’t very developed and were mere “helpers”. The story is definitely a creative one. I would’ve been ready to read this as a series chronicling his entire life from his diaries, I was kinda disappointed he didn’t do that.

⭐All his books are short but packed with surprises and just plain fun. This one is set in early 1900 and I am not sure if a Pizzle is anatomopathology correct for the period but it does not matter, it makes you smile and moves you along nicely. Not sure about the end seems a little too quick but then again this is a diary… or the extract from one at least.

⭐Mr.Dahls wonderful story should not be confused with his narratives directed toward children. Indeed, it is a merry romp through the imagination of a literary giant. An adult book, yet not for the faint of heart. Clever, funny, engrossing and full of hilarious episodes, read it and enjoy.

⭐It’s true that the writing style is rather clever. However, I feel that the story itself is somewhat a slipshod low-brow book mostly about stealing the sperm of the influential individuals of the time period in which this book has been written. When you think about it, the book celebrates theft. Sperm is something that men own, and they have the right to determine who they wish to provide this to. This book celebrates sexual degradation and literally rape of men by encouraging a woman to intoxicate the men in the book to give their sperm to her (which she would sell to a sperm bank). If you think about it, the mind of a person who would write such a book would have to be a bit perverted and demented and I fail to see the humor in it. Theft is theft. Theft isn’t funny.

⭐Dahl takes you on a journey set after WW1 through the eyes of a randy cad, who is intelligent, imaginative, inventive, well connected and has a good head start in life. He uses all these to his advantage in seducing women and conning his way to a fortune with two conspirators needed to pull off his ambitious heist.I read it all the day it arrived !

⭐As you’d expect from a Roald Dahl book it’s worth every penny.Very amusing and cheeky, finished it quickly within the two days of downloading. Buy it, you won’t be disappointed, occasional shades of Flashman which brought back memories….!

⭐A thought out plot which seemed to lack a coherent end. I would have like to have seen how the ill gotten gains were disposed . The characters of Yasmin and Arthur seemed more cartoon like than Oswald’s. Some of the language particularly towards women seemed dated and might cause offence now. Still a good romp with a spectacularly fantastic idea at is core.

⭐good read a bit racy in parts not for the easily offended

⭐Read the book first time some 20 years ago and it’s still worth reading it again
