Description

A landmark definitive edition of one of our most innovative and beloved poetsThe landmark oeuvre of Marianne Moore, one of the major inventors of poetic modernism, has had no straight path from beginning to end; until now, there has been no good vantage point from which to see the body of her remarkable work as a whole. Throughout her life Moore arranged and rearranged, visited and revisited, a large majority of her existing poetry, always adding new work interspersed among revised poems. This makes sorting out the complex textual history that she left behind a pressing task if we mean to represent her work as a poet in a way that gives us a complete picture. New Collected Poems offers an answer to the question of how to represent the work of a poet so skillful and singular, giving a portrait of the range of her voice and of the modernist culture she helped create.William Carlos Williams, remarking on the impeccable precision of Moore’s poems, praised “the aesthetic pleasure engendered when pure craftsmanship joins hard surfaces skillfully.” It is only in New Collected Poems that we can understand her later achievements, see how she refashioned her earlier work, and get a more complete understanding of her consummate craftsmanship, innovation, and attention to detail. Presented and collected by Heather Cass White, the foremost scholar of Moore’s work, this new collection at last allows readers to experience the untamed force of these dazzling poems as the author first envisioned them.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Heather Cass White begins by observing that all prior editions of Marianne Moore’s poetry, including those dubbed “Collected” and “Complete,” could be more accurately titled “Selected Poems.” Unfortunately, this observation also applies to her own edition. But what is an editor to do with a poet like Moore, who made significant, heavy revisions to her early work?Moore’s poems are distinguished by their sensitivity and precision, and she revised them assiduously, but not always for the better–the most notorious example being her gutting her poem “Poetry” from thirty-one lines to three. To cite just one more example, White ’s edition provides the version of “An Octopus,” one of Moore’s finest poems, from her 1924 collection, “Observations.” White does point out in her notes that Moore cut thirty-two lines of the poem in her “Collected” and “Complete Poems,” but she fails to mention that “the grasshoppers of Greece,” in the lines following the cut, are reduced to just plain Greeks in the later editions. That poem–the revised version from the “Collected” and “Complete Poems”–isn’t in this edition. And sometimes the revised versions are improvements. While it’s useful that White provides “Observations” mostly in its original form, she was beat by Linda Leavell’s reissuing it last year. Instead of getting this edition, if you’re interested in Moore, you could obtain “Observations” and the other volumes White characterizes as Moore’s key books–the “Selected Poems” edited by T.S. Eliot (1935), the “Collected Poems” (1951) and the “Complete Poems” (1967), all readily available from Amazon and probably at a library near you–and decide for yourself if Moore’s changes are for the better. Or you could trust the judgment of Grace Schulman, a poet and Moore scholar, who did a very readable edition of Moore’s poems for Penguin. As for this edition, don’t believe the hype!

⭐I bought this book having heard that Marianne Moore was an eminence in American poetry as well as having read a few of her poems. What I loved and recommend this book because of is its introduction — not just a piece that puts Moore into her biographic and poetic life context but one that teaches about poetry in general through Moore as the exceptional example from which I can think of all poets: topic, rhyme, rhythm, clarity, purpose, word choice, and of course alteration over time. Now off to the poems.

⭐good book. I like it.

⭐Would definitely recommend. Nice collection of one of my favorite poets. Fun to read some of the poems Moore edited over the years in original form.

⭐Invaluable guide to the work of a great American poet.

⭐A wonderful supplement to Moore’s work to add to her oeuvre. Obviously the 3 star review pales in comparison to the likes of Harold Bloom among others.

⭐just perfect!

⭐Perfect

⭐Eine editorische Glanzleistung, lange überfällig. Marianne Moores Gedichte fetzen einfach, absolute Empfehlung.Still enjoying these poems.

⭐It is a treasure which can make you rich with a sea of unmeasurable wealth…
