⭐The stories in this bundle show us B. Russell at his best. In his characteristic sarcastic style, he exposes the blatant lies, the veiled interests behind religious and political movements and the insanity of world `leaders’ obsessed by personal power. Their nightmares reveal their hidden fears, naïve illusions, repressed wishes and frightening horror scenes. The Queen of Sheba with her stern haughtiness (`there is on earth one man worthy of my love’) falls from her throne. The wife of a `virtuous’ censor becomes obsessed by `dirty’ words.A psychoanalyst gives his `profound’ verdict on six major Shakespeare heroes `at a guinea a minute’.A Professor of Philosophy, who avoids the word `not’, is confronted with Satan, the Spirit of Negation. An `existentialist’ philosopher is looking for `anything in the world which will lead him to admit that he exists’.A mathematician is obsessed by the number 137.Stalin, after being captured, is handed over to a committee of Quakers, who believe that the power of love can lead him to repentance.A US president looses his political impact, owing to the power of the purse (Congress).A US foreign minister is horrified by the downfall of the US Empire. In `Dr. Southport Vulpes’s nightmare’, two warmongers are complotting to eradicate the human race with robots. In `Zahatopolk’ (B. Russell’s `1984′), the Red men have conquered the whole world. They installed a totalitarian regime, with an aristocracy dominating `all the proud Red aristocrats’, as the people are called. Only the hundred most promising students can have a glimpse of past regimes and their policies of freedom. The worm is in the bud: `Your marvelous morality justifies the oppression and degradation of the great human race. Whoever imprisons another becomes himself a prisoner of fear and hate.’In “Faith and Mountains’, two political sects fight one another to conquer the world. But, the rhetoric and the dogmas veil the real facts and the real interests. The story shows also B. Russell’s exasperation with Man: `Is it possible that any movement so vast, and so potent in moving men’s mind, should be based upon nothing but fraud and folly? We consider ourselves distinguished from the ape by the power of thought. We think, it is true, but we think so badly that I often feel it would be better if we did not.’These brilliant stories written by a superb free mind, are a must read for all those who want to understand the `human’ world we live in.

⭐I read this book many years ago when it was first published in paperback. I lost access to that copy and I am pleased that Nightmares has been reprinted. This is one of the most fascinating books that I have ever read. It is both thought-provoking and highly entertaining. The characterizations and settings are vivid. There are several long dreams, including one about competing cults that promise that either molybdenum or the magnetic pole will cure all ailments, and another about a resurgent Inca civilization dominating the earth. The nightmares are attributed to eminent persons of the 1950s’ i.e., Dean Acheson’s Nightmare, etc. You won’t be able to put this one down.
