Description
Two dazzling novellas from the celebrated author of Fahrenheit 451.Two previously unpublished novellas comprise this astonishing new volume from one of science fiction’s greatest living writers. In the first, ‘Somewhere a Band is Playing’, newsman James Cardiff is lured through poetry and his fascination with a beautiful and enigmatic young woman to Summerton, Arizona. The small town’s childless population hold an extraordinary secret which has been passed on for thousands of years unbeknownst to the rest of human civilization. In the second novella, ‘Leviathan ’99’, the classic tale of Herman Melville’s ‘Moby Dick’ is reborn as an interstellar adventure. It recounts the exploits of the mad Captain Ahab, who, blinded by his first encounter with a gigantic comet called ‘Leviathan’, pursues his lunatic vendetta across the universe. Born in space and seeking adventure in the skies, astronaut Ishmael Jones joins the crew aboard the Cetus 7 and quickly finds his fate in the hands of an indefatigable captain.Published together for the first time in one volume, these two stories twinkle with Bradbury’s characteristically intricate metaphors and lyrical phrases. Both are a lasting testament to an older generation of writers that, much like the Leviathan itself, are on the threshold of passing on into the realm of legend.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Bradbury removes me from this century and to a place inside an RCA sound stage. ‘Somewhere a Band is Playing’ has rolling descriptions of an idealized community, adrift in time. James Cardiff steps off the train, inexplicably happy. There are sights: horse carriage, old residences, manicured lawns, old-fashioned pantry/kitchens and ice boxes with drip pans beneath. Tastes, too: fresh baked goods, omelettes, soup and wine. Sensations: chill of ice in your hand, rocker on front porch and shady interior rooms. Laughter, but no children, beauty without artificial aid, a lover that disappears before dawn. Mysterious and wonderful wine. This haunts like the movie
⭐.Then Bradbury was in his ‘Moby Dick’ mode as he wrote Leviathan ’99. Fantastic. Mental breakdown of a Captain chasing his own whale in space; it knows him, the crew (good and bad), will not go without taking them with it. So that would have been an excellent Halloween epic- could still be, with our CGI and robot cameras. Even better than
⭐.Get this if you read prose and poetry aloud for others!
⭐Somewhere a Band is playing is just like a big and beautiful poem, really enjoyable, another perfect tale from the great Bradbury. Leviathan 99 felt kind of forced and a off in some ways, thats why I’m giving it 4 stars, but still a most if you enjoy Bradbury work.
⭐Ray Bradbury’s Now and Forever contains two novellas: Somewhere a Band is Playing and Leviathan ’99. Somewhere a Band is Playing is about a writer finding himself in a small town in the Arizona desert. Almost nobody has died in over 100 years, but all remain youthful. Reading this story is like caressing velvet: it is soft and compelling. Bradbury at his best.Leviathan ’99 is Herman Melville’s Moby Dick transferred to outer space. The Leviathan is a massive comet that may collide with Earth and the rocket ship captain, years previously blinded by the comet, is determined to prevent the occurrence even if it kills him and all his crew. The story’s interest is peaked with the knowledge that Bradbury wrote the screen play for the 1956 movie Moby Dick starting Gregory Peck. An excellent adaptation of a classic to another time and place.
⭐I love Ray Bradbury. Without hesitation I can say he’s my favorite author. And stories like “Somewhere A Band Is Playing” and “Leviathan ’99” are the reason why. While Ray’s particular brand of flowing, poetical prose can be a little ham handed at times, its often beautiful and part of the magic of reading his tales. I definitely recommend this novel to Bradbury fans and fans of fantasy and science fiction.
⭐I’ve been on a RB jag this year and have been introducing myself to all the tales I’ve either missed or haven’t been aware of. This small volume is further proof that the writer hasn’t lost a step to Father Time and continues to charm and delight the reader just like a fine wine would satisfy any gourmet…in fact that’s just how these longer stories should be consumed…carefully sipped and returned to over time rather than drained during one marathon sitting… these tales are so well done that you should savor them for as long as possible.
⭐2 amazing tales by one of the best!
⭐Ray Bradbury has once again created two thought provoking tales, one of a unqiue town in Arizona where no one ages and another set in space chasing an elusive comet.Ray, always the romantic, involves several themes into “Somewhere A Band is Playing.” one of youth seeking love and companionship, yet another being the desire of us all to live forever.”Leviathan 99,” echoing Melville’s battle with Moby Dick, has a crew seeking out a rebel comet out to destroy them before they destroy it. All good reading, fast paced and exciting.
⭐Books should make us think and “Somewhere a Band is Playing” certainly invites the reader to think about life, death, eternity, choices, love etc. It’s a novella that needs to be read a few times in order to not miss all that Bradbury is asking of the reader.I loved Chapter 14 which consists of two sentences. “Nef was not at breakfast, or lunch, or dinner. He went to bed hungry.” You’ll have to read the book to understand all that a fine writer like Mr. Bradbury conveys in those two sentences.
⭐GENERAL IMPRESSION:I really enjoyed Now And Forever. I thought both novellas were excellent. I did wonder why Bradbury chose to group them together and publish them under the title Now And Forever. Both novellas are very different so it seemed odd to release them in one volume. Just a thought.SOMEWHERE A BAND IS PLAYING:I thought this novella was great. It reminded me a little of two of my favourite stories by Stephen King, Rock and Roll Heaven and Rainy Season. If you’ve read both stories you’ll know why Somewhere A Band Is Playing makes me think of them. Somewhere A Band Is Playing is the perfect mystery story set in an unusual town in the middle of nowhere. I liked the fact not many questions are answered before the residents up and disappear at the end. This was a great story.LEVIATHAN ’99:I’ve never read Moby Dick so I’ve no idea how Bradbury’s sci-fi version, Leviathan ’99 compares. I thought this novella was great as well. I’m very fussy about what sci-fi I enjoy reading so wasn’t sure what to expect with Leviathan ’99. I thought it was great. Leviathan ’99 is about a mad man in charge of a spaceship, forcing his hapless crew to confront a deadly comet in order to avenge an accident that cost his sight. What’s not to love? This was also a great story.
⭐A book consisting of two Novellas. I enjoyed the first story more but could still see the beauty in the second. It’s Ray Bradbury. You can’t go wrong. Definitely worthy of your time.
⭐Chose the book as a massive ray Bradbury fan.Love the book, wish there were more of his books available for the kindle.Recommend it to everyone.
⭐Not a lot to say really, just brilliant as usual.
⭐Not one of his best
