Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I have dabbled in many mediums but have never had any training or study program. This book is it! As I have been reading the thing that I like best is that it tells you why and why not.People say, “Experience is the best teacher” but I have found the corollary – Experience may be the best teacher but it is also the most expensive”. Say you happen to paint a beautiful picture but you didn’t prime the “support” (anything you paint ON)…and then in a couple of years it start falling apart from the underside THEN you’ll be sorry you hadn’t known….or you put a lot of thinner ON thick paint and the thinner layer dries way faster and the oil never dries. Or you are sketching with a paint extremely thinned with terp and you love the effect and so decide to leave it. With time you sadly discover that that thinned paint was not stable and can be dusted off, ruining your masterpiece. This book is like a college course of the basics. But it still lets you have the basics and gets you started before you have to learn it all. I did not give it a five because as I was writing this review I realized that so many topics I went to refer to were not in the index. Examples: Primer, yellowing paint, cracking paint…still I recommend this for anyone who wants to learn all aspects, but especially for beginners – it is quite comprehensive.BUT NOW A YEAR LATER I find I don’t open it at all BECAUSE there is not an adequate index.

⭐I tried oil painting briefly in college and again for a couple months prior to retirement. For the last six years I’ve focused on watercolor painting and wanted to try oils again. However, I realized that I had no clue how to use oil paints except straight from the tube. This book did an excellent job of explaining layering (especially fat over lean), glazing, sgraffito, impasto, and numerous other techniques. The book also presented safety protocols when working with toxic paints, thinners, and glazes and procedures for organizing materials and cleaning brushes. There were numerous practice assignments and helpful hints throughout the book.

⭐This book is written for the beginner, like me. Very well illustrated, written. But not over the top with technical talk, which I like. It should not turn off or bog down the beginner. So all in all, very comprehensive encouraging. Well worth the cost.

⭐I was actually surprised that this book covers so much area, so many aspects and background information about oil painting…..i am thinking much of the info in this book could be used for acrylics too…..

⭐This book should be everyone’s first instructional text regarding oil painting! I can’t think of another “how to” book on the subject that is even close to offering as much, and in such an easy to understand manner. Granted, once you have “mastered” this issue, you will need to go deeper somewhere else. The only downside is the title and humiliating cover that everyone on the street recognizes (you don’t want to walk in the front door of your local Museum of Modern Art with one of these beauties under your arm!) – if you are a beginner, amateur, or it has been a long time since you picked up a brush….buy it, you’ll love it, it is probably exactly what you have been looking for.

⭐This book got me started with oil painting and gave me the confidence to dive in. It provided list of materials, theory, practical tips, exercises and more. Even experienced painters decided to purchase after reviewing my copy. It was a perfect way to start and I look forward to many years of referring back to “Dummies!” Another winner in the invaluable series.

⭐A fine resource for the beginning oil artist…covers all the bases on materials, techniques and useful exercises.

⭐Excellent condition. Actually received the book faster than estimated. Very pleased.

⭐I’ve been painting with acrylics for a few years getting increasingly frustrated with how quickly they dry. I wanted the ease of blending that I knew I could get with oils. I watched YouTube videos but they didn’t help me to understand the supposedly very simple science of the layering techniques of oils (fat over thin). I couldn’t afford to take a course so in desperation turned to this book in kindle format. This book took me right to the start of the process and I found that by working through the book that it really is a simple process….. I am only halfway through the book and I am impressed with the way everything is explained properly right from the start. The way this book has been written is brilliant and I am over the moon with what I have learned so far. What I have discovered is that despite the fact that some artists say you don’t need to be able to draw to paint a knowledge of drawing helps hugely. This book is the best investment I’ve made in my quest to learn more about painting.

⭐I bought this for my mum who had just begun to paint in oils. She has been watching some of the Bob Ross programmes and decided she wanted to give oil painting a go. She didnt know much about it though so i purchased this book in the hope that it might teach her how to use different methods for different visual effects. She loved it, read from start to finish and i have to say it is all down to this book. It arrived in perfect condition, brand new and full of really useful information to help my mum to produce some amazing pieces of art. I shall attach a few photos to show you how good she has got thanks to this book.

⭐A good enough book, well illustrated.Frustrated by the use of USA products, coins, etc to describe things. For example, squeezing out paint the size of a dime or a nickel means nothing to me- why can’t they stick to proper measurements that are used globally? Same again with references to USA retailers to buy certain products from. There is a world outside the US, you know!

⭐This, without doubt is the best book for oil painting there is. Trust in it and I will be surprised if you don’t do OK. Dennis

⭐i was waiting for this book so i could start my oil paintings and i new there were images i could see too. but the images’s were not clear so not happy and will not order from this company again
