User’s Reviews
From Publishers Weekly Despite inept prose and an overload of synthetic crises, Cook’s new novel will probaby be popular with fans of Coma, Godplayer and his other thrillers. The heroine is gutsy, naive Dr. Melissa Blumenthal of the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. Sent to report on an exotic, killer virus that is claiming victims in every state, the young doctor learns more than she should for her own safety. There are clues to a scheme by the prestigious members of the Physicians Action Congress to control the medical profession by planting the virus, which wipes out personnel and patients, in health-care centers; strangely, these are the only locations where the disease has been breaking out. Confiding her suspicions to a colleague at CDC, Melissa is betrayed and has to fight for her life repeatedly, performing feats that defy belief. Finally, she is free to embrace the suitor who proves himself worthy and let the law deal with the criminals in PAC. ⭐ Robin Cook used to be a doctor, much as John Grisham used to be a lawyer. While Mr. Grisham writes legal thrillers; Dr. Cook instead gets wrapped up in medical mysteries. Who better to spin a yarn that pulls you in from the first moment to zip through a novel that are masterful in the details of their once-primary jobs. But this review is strictly regarding Robin Cook’s “Outbreak”. I enjoy a lot of books, and usually read several at a time, juming between them. However, “Outbreak” was so enthralling, so incredibly fast-paced and exciting, I couldn’t put it down. AndI couldn’t even consider reading another book whilst reading this particular novel. I don’t doubt that immediately after writing this review, I will select another one of Dr. Cook’s novels, to read feverishly over the next fews days. And I have no doubt I’ll thoroughly enjoy it.This particular novel introduces us to Doctor Marissa Blumenthal, previously a pediatrician, who has recently changed careers and is now working at the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, GA, where as an Epidemiologist Investigative Officer, she is sent to Los Angeles, CA, to look into an outbreak of a previously unknown virus that hits with blinding speed, and although it has some symptoms in common with other diseases, it has a few new ones that don’t fit at all. After dealing with this, and a few other outbreaks, she begins to wonder if there might not be a human hand involved in these epidemics…This novel will be the first thing you’ll want to pick up upon waking, and the last thing you will put down before nodding off. It is an adrenaline filed medical murder mystery that you won’t be able to get enough. It’s absorbing, delightful, serious, scary, but fun, too.I highly, highly recommend it.
⭐ I love reading all of Robin Cook’s books, and living through the current Coronna Virus Pandemic made this book very timely. This was a page turner with a surprise ending.
⭐ Among others, the author uses the term “oriental” to describe an Asian man, “an Indian” to describe a man from India, and “a handsome black” to describe a Black/African-American man. Cook would do well to update his terminology to the modern age and take a look at how women are constructed. The measurements he gives his female lead are back-breakingly fictitious. The story itself is full of medical holes as well. I stopped reading halfway through. A true disappointment.
⭐ Really good medical mystery, although a little far fetched.Scary regarding what can happen if a deadly virus spreads across the country..Looking forward to the next one in the series…
⭐ I’ve been a fan for a while. Had to have this book for an event at work; double bonus since I’d not read it before. I always recommend Robin Cook for anyone who loves a good thriller and has a bit of medical knowledge. You don’t have to work in the medical field to understand his books, however.
⭐ Good potential. Hated the ending. Why forgive him? I’m not sure Dr Cook adequately represented a woman’s perspective. Freaky to read with covid abound.
⭐ A fast action medical thriller that seems more than appropriate the face of our current viral pandemic! Another great medical mystery book that I would highly recommend.
⭐ Robin Cook delivers a fast paced exciting medical thriller. Although this is a work of fiction the books subject, Ebola, is still relevant and terrifying. Such a good book.
⭐ Robin Cook is one of the best Medical mystery writers of all time I’ve read every book he has written if it’s one I really like I will read it again. Keep them coming Mr. Cook.
⭐ Very good book. I like Robin Cook’s books and this one wasn’t a disappointment.
