Description

The last years have seen a symbiosis of the fields of elementary particle physics and the astrophysics of the early universe. This text presents the background of the subjects and the latest developments at a level suitable for final year undergraduates and beginning graduate students. The first chapters cover the properties and interactions of elementary particles followed by discussion of the early universe, including inflation, dark matter and dark energy, and the growth of the galactic structure. The final chapters discuss cosmic rays and particle physics in the stars. The close relation between particle interactions and large scale development of the cosmos is a constant theme in the text, with emphasis on the interplay between experiment and theory. This book is an enlarged and updated version of the first edition published five years ago. In a rapidly evolving field, emphasis has of course been placed on the most recent developments. However, the opportunity has also been taken to re-arrange the material and present it in more detail and at somewhat greater length.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Used this for a grad class. Broad scope. It was very helpful and well written. Good commentaries on data. Reasonable discussion of dark energy, Better than other PAP books that I have looked at.

⭐I used this book for an undergraduate course in particle and nuclear astrophysics. I thought this book was good. It is kind of overwhelming at first but it is not to much material. The Problems are hard to do but not to hard to do (I hope that people understand what I mean).

⭐NOTE: I am reviewing the first edition, not the current second edition. The second edition has 3 more chapters and is organized quite differently. This text book is alright, however there are better. I find it a bit difficult to read. I think this is because he often tries to do too much math within the paragraphs. It would be better if he placed all of the math separate from the text. Astroparticle Physics by Grupen is much easier to follow and more well written. If you have a choice, I would pick the Grupen book.I also dislike it when he (and particle physicists in general) set hbar = c = 1. This is inconsistently done within this text. This makes it a pain to figure out whether rho is the matter density or the energy density in certain equations (i.e. derivations from the Friedmann eqns) and in the problems. There is a big physical difference. It also makes it difficult to do a unit analysis of results, which is important to do when solving the problems! You can’t answer a problem asking for a time, with a distance! Likewise, I found the first chapter (which deals with particle physics) quite useless. The nice thing about this text is that the answers to most problems are located in the back of the book. This is a plus. However Grupen also has more detailed solutions to all of his problems in the back of the book.

⭐I have the 2nd edition of this book and unlike the precedent commentary, I find it great. Everything is arranged quite naturally, the book is not overwhelmed with math at all. It is written in a clear and precise language which makes it very easy to follow and understand. It covers the bulk of astroparticle physics. It is a good book to have for reference and can be very easily used in a phd level class on astroparticle physics.

⭐One of the best book in Particle Astrophysics I ever seen. It’s strong;y recommended by the teachers at the university or some summer schools in this area of Physics. You can search other books of Perkins too.
