Description

This fascinating book assembles human stories about physicists and mathematicians. Remarkably, these stories cluster around some general themes having to do with the interaction between scientists, and with the impact of historic events — such as the advent of fascism and communism in the twentieth century — on scientists’ behavior. Briefly, but lucidly, some of the beautiful science that brought these scientists together in the first place is explained.Author’s webpage: freund9.googlepages.com/peterfreundwritings.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I am a physicist, I like biographies of scientists, and like to read and hear stories about them. Reading this book feels like meeting someone who has been close to many physicists and mathematicians, and tells you stories about them. Some of these stories I knew, but I liked to hear them again, many i never heard before. The author also likes history, and connects some dots that I didn’t know before. It was a pleasure!

⭐“A Passion for Discovery” has been praised for its contribution to the history of physics; the author’s insights into the impacts of fascism and communism on science in the 20th century and his irreverent riffs on life in academia. But if you want to become a scientist of any stripe—or think you already are one—this book is about much more. Read it for Freund’s take on coping with a world where ‘research results’ arrive through a fire hose. And then hang onto it as “A Scientist’s Guide to the Perplexed.”

⭐In his book, Peter Friend represents Albert Einstein as a fallible human being. The author, of course, is eligible for his opinion if it based on the facts. But here it is based on the rumors about Einstein-Nordstrom interaction and others. At the same time, Peter disregards the readily available documents that contradict his assertions. No passion for discovery can justify disseminating warped data, especially concerning the great man.
