Description

Psychologist and bestselling author Benjamin Hardy, PhD, debunks the pervasive myths about personality that prevent us from learning—and provides bold strategies for personal transformation In Personality Isn’t Permanent, Dr. Benjamin Hardy draws on psychological research to demolish the popular misconception that personality—a person’s consistent attitudes and behaviors—is innate and unchanging. Hardy liberates us from the limiting belief that our “true selves” are to be discovered, and shows how we can intentionally create our desired selves and achieve amazing goals instead. He offers practical, science-based advice to for personal-reinvention, including: • Why personality tests such as Myers-Briggs and Enneagram are not only psychologically destructive but are no more scientific than horoscopes • Why you should never be the “former” anything–because defining yourself by your past successes is just as damaging to growth as being haunted by past failures • How to design your current identity based on your desired future self and make decisions here-and-now through your new identity • How to reframe traumatic and painful experiences into a fresh narrative supporting your future success • How to become confident enough to define your own life’s purpose • How to create a network of “empathetic witnesses” who actively encourage you through the highs and lows of extreme growth • How to enhance your subconscious to overcome addictions and limiting patterns • How redesign your environment to pull you toward your future, rather than keep you stuck in the past • How to tap into what psychologists call “pull motivation” by narrowing your focus on a single, definable, and compelling outcome The book includes true stories of intentional self-transformation—such as Vanessa O’Brien, who quit her corporate job and set the Guinness World Record for a woman climbing the highest peak on every continent in the fastest time; Andre Norman, who became a Harvard fellow after serving a fourteen-year prison sentence; Ken Arlen, who instantly quit smoking by changing his identity narrative; and Hardy himself, who transcended his childhood in a broken home, surrounded by issues of addiction and mental illness, to earn his PhD and build a happy family. Filled with strategies for reframing your past and designing your future, Personality Isn’t Permanent is a guide to breaking free from the past and becoming the person you want to be.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I really enjoy reading this book. It was offered here on Amazon at a very good reasonable fair price. I would suggest and recommend it to everyone.

⭐(3.5 stars) I personally liked reading this book and got a lot of good out of it. I will say that he doesn’t seem to define what he thinks personality is exactly. The title almost seems like a buzzword catch phrase rather than a grounding idea of what he talks about throughout the book. This book basically reads like a synopsis of a whole bunch of other books, Ted talks, and research studies done by other people. So if you’re looking for all the scientific backing in here, you might be disappointed, but I would still recommend reading it because there are a lot of “aha” moments to be had. And be prepared to add to your reading list with some of the more in-depth works from his notes where he found his information.

⭐I really loved how this book challenged me to look at things I’m new ways. There was some amazing self reflective questions in here and it was a perfect read going into the new year . Great read that I didn’t want to out down !

⭐This was the absolute best book I could have picked to kick off a new year!I actually love personality tests. We’ve done the DiSC and Kolbe assessments at my work. I think they’re really helpful in getting to know yourself better and how you work with other people. But, in his book, Personality Isn’t Permanent, Benjamin Hardy definitely makes you think differently about those kinds of assessments. Personality tests can be limiting, and it’s important not to let them prevent you from creating the life you are meant to live.“When you decide who you’ll be and the life you’ll live, you can have anything you truly want. You can become an outlier. You can have experiences that not only shock other people but shock yourself ”Hardy focuses a lot on “trauma” which, to be honest, I found a little hard to get my head around. We tend to think of trauma as major incidents that cause PTSD. However, what he means by trauma is: failures and missed opportunities. It can be a much smaller scale — anytime someone or something made you feel bad about something that now limits you in some way.He gives the example of a woman whose teacher corrected her drawing something like 40 years ago, and this incident stuck with her her entire life. It made her feel like she was not capable of creating art and so she never pursued it, despite a deep inner desire to illustrate children’s books.Throughout the book, I had to keep thinking about what trauma may have occurred to me that could be holding me back in some way. I realized public speaking is probably my thing. There wasn’t a specific incident of a person making me feel bad, it’s just a fear of mine. I shy away from it. “I’m not good at public speaking,” is an excuse I tell myself and others. My personality tests confirm that this is not one of my strong suits. I am a heads-down, behind the scenes kind of worker, not an Influencer (on the DiSC scale). If public speaking were necessary for growth in my career, then this is the type of self-limiting belief that would hold me back from becoming who I’m truly meant to be.Hardy talks a lot about journaling:“Your journal is a brilliant place to actively convince yourself, emotionally, that what you want is already yours—you influence yourself through strategic communication”In every chapter, he provides self-reflective questions to answer in your journal. This is very helpful for the reader to apply what they’re learning as they read the book.Personality Isn’t Permanent is a very motivational read! I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in personal development and growth.

⭐I haven’t finished this book just yet but so far I must say it’s definitely a great read!

⭐I’m lucky enough to have been able to read an advanced copy of Personality Isn’t Permanent, since I interviewed Dr. Hardy for my podcast, Stories of Hope in Hard Times. I also ordered a hardbound book because I plan on re-reading this transformational book over and over! This is a powerful book about hope. First, it teaches that you can change who you are. Your personality can change. It isn’t permanent! Isn’t that a liberating concept to ponder? You don’t have to stay stuck if you aren’t happy. You can change! Second, it teaches you that the trauma you have experienced in life is can be reframed/changed so that you look more at the lessons and who you’ve become because of it instead of staying stuck. In the introduction, Dr. Hardy explains, “The biggest evidence of the ideas in this book is my own life.” He changed from being a video game junkie who barely graduated from high school to being the #1 blogger on Medium and earned his doctorate in Psychology. One thing I love about this book is the personal stories Dr. Hardy shares throughout. The stories help teach the concepts he is explaining in such a logical but extremely personal manner. I didn’t feel like I was being talked down to by a doctor who was speaking way above my head. Dr. Hardy is personable and down to earth.I love the journaling prompts throughout the book. Dr. Hardy really invites us to write our thoughts, process our traumas, and imagine our future self and write about it. The more clear who we want to be becomes, we can then break down into mini-goals how to get there. This is a must read for 2020—especially in our troubled times. There is hope, and we can change!

⭐I finished reading this book in only few days because it is very captivating. This book made me question and rethink about many limiting myths about ‘personality’. I take notes whenever I read books, and this one has many golds in it.In the end of each section, the author put several key questions. I have put them in my learning journals and will answer them in the next few weeks. I predict it will be extremely helpful when I design my best future self Highly recommended for anyone who enjoy self-development, for anyone who is struggling in processing past traumas, and for anyone who feel stuck in life.

⭐This is a great book that helps you realise that You can design your life and your personality can be driven by your purpose. The book debunks many Myths about Personality tests and the fact that the past is NOT the greatest predictor of the futureWho do you want to BE and what CHOICES do you want to make?It encourages you to focus on your Future Self – What you want to be in the future is more important than who you are now and should actually inform who you are now.The book highlights four levers that actively shape your personality:-past traumas-identity narrative-subconscious-environmentThe past can be given different meanings. Your past can change and it must change. Your past evolves as you evolvePersonality is a by-product of the decisions in your life. If you are serious about your purpose it will change your personalityBen uses stories well to demonstrate myths about personality and how people have dramatically changed their personalities. He helps drive the whole notion of Purpose and Goals and how they come from three sources – Exposure, Desire and ConfidenceBut the key message of the book is that You need ONE major goal. A Keystone Goal. Just the way you have a Keystone Habit. This can allow you to focus on your Future Self and what you want to be.The book has lots of useful practical tips like – Go to bed one hour earlier. Wake up one hour earlier. Practice daily journaling. There is a really useful chapter on Trauma and using the concept of an empathetic witness to let go of this trauma and stop it defining your personalityGreat strategies on labelling emotions, re-framing your narrative and steps to clearly outline your future selfThe last two chapters are filled with other practical tips e.g practising fasting, giving money away, strategic remembering/ignorance and forcing functions. Each chapter also has powerful questions to help you think about and reflect on the concepts covered and challenges you to change your thinking on these. This is a really empowering book that can help you let go of the past and thinking your personality can’t change and is your authentic self. It helps you with practical ways to let go of that past and focus on the Future Self which in turn will inform how you act in the now and support you in changing your personality. Highly recommended.

⭐I liked the sample of the book and the 1st few chapters– the author breaks down personality tests, and how they are not very accurate. So far, so good. But then the book turned into something else.It turned into one of those books very popular in the 80s/90s– everything should be goal oriented, you can get anything you want if you set to mind to it, if you are not a millionaire by age 30 its because “yOu diDnt wAnT it eNough”The author criticises doing things just for the love of it– instead everything must have a “goal”. You are supposed to sacrifice everything to this “goal”.I loved books like these in my 20s. Then, after suffering poor health and broken relationships, I realised that no, the goal isnt everything. Now, I don’t mind goal driven books. If you like them, power to you. What I find very dishonest– the book starts off as one type, then moves to something else. And the author uses extreme examples, like the person who spent 10 years in prison, then became Harvard researcher. And I was like, how is this relevant to me?And though the authors likes to boast he has a Phd, he started talking about Law of Attraction like “visualiation”, how “you can get anything if you can just want it enough!”. And I was like, dude, no. Just no.A very dishonest book, I am sorry to say. Please avoid

⭐Dr Benjamin Hardy’s book, “Personality Isn’t Permanent”, has literally changed my life! This book has given me the hope that my life can be different in the future. Dr Benjamin Hardy has outlined many practical steps that we can take, in order to design, create and live a different life in the future.I am very grateful to Dr Benjamin Hardy for his transparency in sharing all aspects of his own story. His honest approach has really helped me to believe that it is possible to have a major change in my own life and in the lives of my clients.Dr Benjamin Hardy shared that he is now the father of three adopted children. He explained that this had helped him to see his own father with increased compassion and understanding. The principles in Dr Benjamin Hardy’s Book, “Personality Isn’t Permanent” can be used in all walks of life. I am recommending this book to my weight loss clients. I am encouraging them to read about Nate Lambert and his weight loss. Dr Benjamin Harding writes about Nate Lambert, who made a single decision to entirely eliminate refined sugar from his diet for the rest of his life. Dr Benjamin Hardy explains that Nate Lambert no longer had “decision fatigue” every day. This was because Nate Lambert had already made the decision that he was no longer going to eat refined sugar in his diet.I have no hesitation in recommending this book to everyone, who wants to change one or more aspects of their life. I have started to follow Dr Benjamin Hardy’s Four-Step process to create a new future for myself in three years from now. I look forward to celebrating the changes in my own life and in the lives of my clients.

⭐I really like the premise of the book, and enjoyed reading chapter 1. The idea that your personality isn’t fixed and you can change is really powerful and if you internalise these lessons I’m sure it can be life changing. And it is certainly a breath of fresh air from modern psychology. Loved the attack against the modern paradigm of “accepting” everything about ourselves. Book is worth it just for that.Chapter 2 for me is where it goes downhill and made me put it down. It recounts a story where some dude turns his life around after being in prison. I don’t care. Someone turning their life around has nothing to do with personality. You can be a shy person for example and commit fraud, if you hadn’t committed fraud and worked for charity it wouldn’t make you not shy. I feel like the book really confuses personality and action here. It then talks about some basic self help stuff about setting goals, sleeping well, not watching YouTube before bed. This is where I had to stop reading, I was hoping for much more advanced and deeper techniques to inact meaningful change, not basic self help advice you can find in any blog. I guess if you are in a rut, are young, or at the start of self improvement journey this will probably be useful to you, but if you already have your life together there isn’t anything beneficial here or new and for me just strayed too far from what I thought the book was meant to be about.

⭐I bought this having listened to an interview with the author on the Dream Revolution app. I have read numerous books on productivity, goal setting and on developing ‘good habits’, but Ben’s book takes all these to another level as he gives practical help in training your self conscious in the process of imagining your ‘future self’. As the title states, and contrary to what many personality profile systems, imply we are not locked in to our personality, our brain’s are ‘plastic’ and we can genuinely become who we want to be as long as we are intentional about it and are prepared to declare it first to our inner self and then to our family and friends. Ben is honest about his own journey and in so doing earns the right to speak with authority of what he has learned and transformation which he continues to experience. A great read. Highly recommended.
