User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I was surprised that the book was physically small. I know that it would be a short book but I assumed that the book size was that of the typical Oxford/Rutledge university publications. The print is a size or two smaller than usual (14 point) so it is somewhat physically difficult to read. The material is presented very well and covers a lot of areas of the philosophy of law. I would gladly pay $2-3 more if the book size were to be slightly larger so the font is a typical university printing.
⭐I am still listening. Shall comment later
⭐A classical case of :”… it is all there in a nutshell”. I do know a bit about law and ethics and I do not believe that a better primer has ever been written. Excellent choice for anyone with no time for the full 600 pages of John Rawls “Theory of Justice” or similar textbooks but who never the less needs a top notch quality introduction to the subject
⭐Met my expectations exactly. Easier read, you don’t have to work hard to understand it. Wacks is a great writer, fun to read.
⭐The text of the book can be shortened in order to justify being called “a very short introduction 🙂 The text is repetitions with some of the repeated paragraphs being almost identical. Apart from that the book presents a good summary of existing legal theories.
⭐This is a good basic primer of a complicated field.
⭐Very good
⭐A really good book to introduce students to the fundamental issues of Phlisophy of Law.
⭐Like all the others in the Very Shrt Introductio series the book was well written and covered all I would expet
⭐Great
⭐Very good informative book.
⭐Brevity is a non-negotiable in context of the Very Short Introduction series. In that light, this book is terrific overview of the different major schools of jurisprudence: all the way from Natural Law to more recent Critical Theories. Mr. Wacks introduces each school of thought in a manner that resembles Socratic questioning. This is juxtaposed to standard-issue jurisprudence commentaries, which merely regurgitate and paraphrase the theorist. In interests of brevity, Mr. Wacks goes light on the socio-economic-political context in which these theories emerged, the only exception being the natural law chapter. However, in context a 35,000 word-limit, the width and explanatory clarity reflect the author’s phenomenal achievement. I must recommend it as a reference to anyone interested in the topic. Before parting, I want to add my observation about philosophy of law/jurisprudence. I don’t think one can read a book and then gain interest in the subject area. The more likely path is, you start going down the rabbit-hole of “what is/should be the law–and why?” in your own head, and then try to find literature to figure it out better. If you don’t have a genuine curiosity about this question, no book can pique your interest in the field (also applies to this book). But if you have thought about this question and want to explore more, this a great resource.
⭐Its for those students who hate Jurisprudence. Raymond Wacks will make you love Jurisprudence. .I became his fan after reading SWOT( Success Without Tears) Jurisprudence) Prof. Wacks is simply awesome. Read him alongwith Micheal J. Sandel’s Justice.
