Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I have seen some rather negative comments on this book from a few other reviewers. Let me start out by stating that I teach a Digital Darkroom course. That course uses Photoshop Elements 5, a very capable program, although not necessarily an easy one. If you are not technically inclined this program will be confusing, to say the least. The manual that comes with it is barely adequate. This is where the Photoshop Elements 5 for Dummies book comes in. It is far superior to the manual included with the program. That is not to state that it is easy. It is not! You will have to put effort into learning the techiques, and methods of Elements 5. I am quite familiar with Photoshop CS2 as I use it for my fine art photography. I thought teaching Elements 5 would be a snap. After all I regularly use the full version, how difficult could a scaled down version be? The answer turned out to be ‘quite difficult’. Photoshop Elements 5 has many features of CS2 but they are implemented differently and sometimes work differently. Some of the things in Elements 5 are not even in CS2! Elements 5 has far superior selection tools, are you listening Adobe?? Elements 5 certainly does not have a lot of the features and tools of its big brother, but who in their right mind would expect it to? It is however very capable and I have it installed on my laptop so I can do preliminary editing in the field. I often need nothing more. This book is invaluable to users of Photoshop Elements 5 as it goes farther and explains better some of the more difficult operations in Elements. But it definitely is not easy, unless you are interested in only the most basic aspects of photo editing.I gave this book 5 stars because it deals elegantly with a difficult subject. Almost all my students buy this book, and they all love it. Granted, being taught in a classroom is easier than tackling it on your own, but this book and some serious effort will get you well on your way. Is it perfect? No, but it is the best of its genre. One unexpected nice feature – if I select a photo to edit from the Elements 5 organizer while working on my desktop computer, where I have both Elements 5 and CS2 installed, the Elements 5 organizer politely asks me wich version of photoshop I want to use to edit it. Very nice! The organizer in Elements 5 is so good that I use it to keep my (thousands) of images organized. Good job Adobe! I guess what I am saying is this “any version of Photoshop is complicated and Elements 5 is no exception”. You will need to put some heavy effort into it, but the rewards are huge. This book will be a great asset in those efforts.
⭐New computer and operating system. My old faithful Photoshop Elements 1 no longer works. I got this version (#5) for Christmas several year ago and didn’t need to really dig into it so long as the earlier version did everything I needed. Now, I need to dig into it and this reference book helps.
⭐The product arrived in excellent condition, the cover is intact without tears or signs of wearing for a used book this was an excellent buy. The one page that seems to somehow be wider than the others was just the page I will be using the most. How lucky can one get to have your favorite page book marked.
⭐Unfortunately I am a show me type learner and this has not helped me get the use out of elements. I can do very basic editing but cannot even begin to use the software to its potential. Need a class
⭐I can see this book being very helpful if you already have a basic understanding of Photoshop Elements. But as a complete novice, I found it confusing and not very useful.
⭐Yeah, it described the procedures okay, but I was lost a lot of the time. I had to figure out how to do almost everything on my own. This is not a step-by-step how to book.
⭐I had a very hard time understanding the Photoshop Tutorials and since I’ve had good results with other Books for Dummies I decided to buy “Photoshop for Dumdums I am very happy with the Edition…the coated stock and four color printing is of excellent quality. The explaination are such that I’m finally able to understand how to perform many of the functions.
⭐Good and helpful !
⭐This is an excellent book. As a beginner who has just started to use Elements 5 it has proved invaluable. Elements 5 is not very intuitve for the beginner and until I bought this book I was on the verge of giving up and looking for a simpler package to learn. However this book assumes you know nothing and takes you through from the most basic steps to how to use the most complicated tools in easy stages. It’s not a quick start guide and you do have to be prepared to read it from page 1 – I’d recommend it to any beginner.
⭐Photoshop Elements 5 For Dummies
⭐There are some pretty clever Dummies about…..unless you are well into Digital this is hard going…too much generalisation given the amount of programs about
⭐A great help for a complex programme.
⭐Unfortunatly we read 2 others excellent books (purchased here on Amazon) on Photoshop Elements v5.00 prior to reading this one. I think that reading the other slightly more advanced books spoilt us. This book is designed for getting very basic knowledge of all the buttons and tools, but you would get that anyway but simply exploring the software. No tutorials to read, just basic information that appears to go on and on. Around about half way through it’s 370 pages it just got very repetitive. This does that and that does this. There are examples written in the book but not a lot of detailed explanations as such. The section on ‘Gradients’ (a very powerful Element 5 tool) was a prime example of a powerful section lightly skipped over. There was not a lot of pictures either come to think of it, just thumbnails. It’s really all about written comments that only just touch the surface. Can’t really say that we would recommend this book at all.As you would expect with this type of book it’s well presented but just so boring. For digital photograph novices such as myself when you own such a powerful piece of software such as Photoshop Elements 5 you need to be told ‘HowTo’ do things as the software is just so versatile. It needs to be explained how the Authors arrived from this to that. A ‘before and after’ thumbnail picture view is simply not good enough for this software. Never learnt a single thing from this book at all. All IMHO of coarse.
