⭐As a worker in earthquake prediction, a field with a bewildering variety of “outsider” researchers constantly lobbing in more or less wild and unfounded theories, it was with interest that I picked up this book after reading a favorable review in Science last year.The first half of the book, which provides historical background on people with unorthodox theories and gives essentially biographical material on a current outsider, Jim Carter, was well written and engaging.Then the shaky analogies started. Such as comparing Jim’s circulons with similar modeling done a century ago by groundbreaking scientists. We get the point that otherwise sane and intelligent people can promote bad ideas, but Jim’s ideas are never shown to have any particular use. The detailed descriptions of Jim’s theories are hard to follow and pointless. Jim’s previous endeavors are detailed, but the obvious conclusion that many were misbegotten is not made. He conceives of a complicated idea, then generally it doesn’t work, for example finding a gold deposit by aeromag, or digging down to a surefire placer deposit. Or spending years making an apparatus to simulate smoke rings. Did he really think staring at colliding smoke rings would show the underlying physics of gravity, electricity, and nuclear forces?Comparing Wolfram with Jim is not an even match – one was a master of computational science, and generated an invaluable toolbox for the scientific community of great power, even if he had some bad theories of everything. The other made flotation bags, not as impressive. Comparing string theorists with outsiders is another case in which one is much more meritorious than the other. We all get that string theories are so far untestable, and may be ultimately useless, but doesn’t mean they are as generally misguided and clueless as most outsider claims.The thesis of the book that theories underlain by hard-to-understand math are bad is bewildering. If only a thousand people in the world understand the math, it can still be correct. Theories that survive study by academia are more likely to be correct and useful than those that cannot survive academia.While one can romanticize lone outside researchers, and a few have been historically important, the examples in this book seem to be mostly people wasting their time and failing to realize they don’t know what they are doing.

⭐This is a nicely written, quirky, informative, thoughtful book. Its subjects are the outsiders, the ‘discoverers’ who blithely ignore dominant paradigms and follow their own more intuitive convictions about how reality is structured. It does this principally through the example of one pre-eminent physics outsider whose depth and breadth of thought especially captured Wertheim’s imagination.Wertheim at no point suffers from Stockholm syndrome – she doesn’t consider actually joining the worldviews of her outsiders – but she takes them seriously, considering them artists perhaps, more than scientists. Or artists of science.It’s a very pleasant read, but also an important one, in a small way. With the arrival of the internet and desktop publishing, dominant paradigms and consensus expert viewpoints have taken a severe beating. People have seized on their new freedom to seek theories and rationales that they like rather than having to select from those that are agreed to be correct by ‘peers’. And, once people join together into any consensus, even if their group is small in relative terms, it becomes an unshakable truth – agreement is all humans need, to form conviction.This has left civilization a bit directionless – instead of proceeding mostly along an agreed-upon path, it just gallops madly off in all directions. Teaching what is “right” is no longer sufficient – people have to learn to think about the persuasiveness of wrong ideas and the deceptions of common sense. In the case of physics, laymen can no longer access evidence for themselves, but only accept second-hand analogies about a level of reality that truly makes no sense at all. This makes almost any well-contrived yarn seem at least as convincing, and more satisfying, unless people have some tools to make a meta-analysis. They can’t understand the language that physics is spoken in, but they can understand the general shape and integrity of the mechanism of the project of human knowledge and objectively make sense of the cloud of alternative certainty that forms around all ideas and theories.This isn’t meaningfully accomplished by just calling outsiders and conspiracy-theorists wrong, or crazy in particular cases, but by considering them in general, looking seriously at what their theories are made of, why they were made, why they are attractive. And this is best done, perhaps, as Wertheim does here, by looking at ideas that are rich and informative in some manner, rather than theories that are simplistic and incoherent.

⭐Wertheim’s respect for her subject really comes across and I definitely warmed to Jim Carter, the main interviewee. But I felt that the author didn’t subject his and others’ theories to the robust criticism that would have more clearly defined the differences (and similarities) between outsider and mainstream science. Any theory can be criticised and questioned and I felt like she was doing him and other outsiders a disservice by not engaging with them as vigorously as she would have done a mainstream scientist.Also, I would have liked to have seen more coverage of other outsider scientists. At times, it reads more like a biography of Jim Carter and I’d love to have got more of a sense of the outsider scene as a whole – as the glimpses you do get are fascinating.This was an interesting read, but it didn’t quite live up to the blurb for me.

⭐I’m excited by the book, as it’s one I’ve wanted to write (almost). As a personal plus for me, I have zero faith in modern theoretical physics, so it resonates in many ways.It’s also a different topic than so many physics ‘worship’ books.Things are improving, though, as more writers question our emperors clothing.
