Description

First published in 2000, this translation of one of the great works of Western political thought is based on the assumption that when Plato chose the dialogue form for his writing, he intended these dialogues to sound like conversations – although conversations of a philosophical sort. In addition to a vivid, dignified and accurate rendition of Plato’s text, the student and general reader will find many aids to comprehension in this volume: an introduction that assesses the cultural background to the Republic, its place within political philosophy, and its general argument; succinct notes in the body of the text; an analytical summary of the work’s content; a full glossary of proper names; a chronology of important events; and a guide to further reading. The result is an accomplished and accessible edition of this seminal work, suitable for philosophers and classicists as well as historians of political thought at all levels.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I am not reviewing Plato’s Republic as a piece of literature. It is a foundational text of western civilization. What more is there to say? If you haven’t read The Republic, do so ASAP. I grew up with Bloom’s Straussian translation of The Republic. It is very faithful to the Greek but riddled with rather clunky English. A guy I’m studying Greek with recommended the Griffith translation of The Republic. I like it very much. I find the translation to be faithful to the Greek and rendered into literate English. A couple of other things that make it better than Bloom IMO: (1) an excellent introduction by GRF Ferrari that contextualizes the dialogue; and (2) footnotes at the bottom of each page of text (rather than in the back of the book). I think this translation is a good choice for people who, like me, are interested in Greek thought but are not academics.

⭐Better than expected condition. Well preserved.

⭐As always, the Cambridge Texts are the best way to read classic texts like Plato’s Republic as they offer a wonderful translation and excellent commentary. If you have to read a older or translated text look for a “Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought” edition. You’ll get the best translation plus extremely helpful things like editor’s footnotes, glossary, and additional information that really helps you fully understand the work.

⭐The question of what is justice is literally centuries old. It is nice to see what the ancients thought about these issues. The translation made the book easier to understand which was important for me being in a political theory class.

⭐Great simply great.

⭐I’ve read this 3 times, and this is by far the best edition. The translation is excellent, and the book is so useful, without getting bogged down in “academics.”

⭐ending was anti climactic

⭐Bought for a student per specification. Fulfilled needs. Was as advertised. Apparantly served the purpose for which it was ordered.

⭐A decent translation, with mediocre notes. The translations and notes of both Paul Shorey (Loeb) and Robin Waterfield (Oxford UP) are much better.

⭐This is a pretty good translation, depending on who you ask. I had a copy of the republic, then needed to buy this exact translation for a specific module on my course. A year or so later, and a different lecturer dismissed the translation as terrible and asked me to get a different copy. I now own four different translations…
