⭐This collection,, available free on Kindle, provides a great opportunity to study various poems of Walt Whitman. This is a large collection. “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry”, one of my favorites is in this collection.Much of Whitman’s poetry is in free verse. There is less structure than in some other poems. There is a vast variety of subject matter.Walt Whitman is not my favorite poet. For whatever reason, I tend to prefer some of the more sophisticated and touching poems of African Americans. I somewhat prefer Carl Sandburg to Walt Whitman. However I really enjoy Walt Ehitman and this and other collections free on Kindle. Thank You for taking the time to read this review.

⭐Whitman’s influence on poetry remain strong. you cannot really understand America without Walt Whitman. Without Leaves of Grass, He has expressed that Civilization quote is up-to-date as you would say, and no student of philosophy of History can do without them. Walt Whitman is America’s poet, he is America.

⭐Great book. Master of description and very beautiful poetry. Read to oneself or listen to it audible. Flows like water.

⭐I’m embarrassed to admit that this was my first real exposure to Whitman’s poetry at age 48. The poems are amazing, and this collection from 1867 covers many of his early and most famous works. America’s bard is exceptional reading and a must study. I wish I had found Whitman years ago.

⭐Currently reading poetry to educate myself on other genres in literature and I suggest anyone who is interested in spiritual poetic themes should start with Walt Whitman. I read this after Leaves of Grass (although there is a condensed version of that in this selection) and I’m still reeling from his words.

⭐Having read “Leaves of Grass”, I expected the same quality of work from Whitman in these poems, and wasn’t let down. These poems also show Whitman and his great grasp of what the true Amerikan ( I like this spelling of America) really is: the working man/woman; the working man/woman who gets their hands dirty in their day to day work to make a living. In these poems, as in “Leaves of Grass,” Whitman pays tribuate to the everyday man/woman who, with their physical seat, literally shaped this country, and are the heart of this country. It’s not quite as polished as “Leaves if Grass”, but still excellent overall.

⭐Whitman is one of those authors more heard of and talked about than read. I learned quite a lot about him in both high school and college, but before reading these selections, could not recall a single line of his work. For good reason it seems. Whitman’s words which were chosen to be placed at the beginning of this little volume frightened me. Both because they are almost incomprehensible and because there are people of presumed sound mind who profess to understand and enjoy this sort of thing. Though I do not know any of them personally. Or if I do, they have kept quiet about it. One may suppose that this is because I am a Philistine who associates with other Philistines who have no love for or understanding of the poetic art. But among my associates, poetry is occasionally quoted and discussed, but never Whitman. Now I know why.I will pause to note that this first English edition, first prepared by William Michael Rossetti in 1868, is said to have been edited to conform with British sensitivities of the day. Perhaps this and the chosen format for the poems may have something to do with the poor impression this volume made upon me. In fairness, once I have recovered from this ordeal, I may try a more highly regarded edition of Whitman. ⭐Es un libro importante para comprender a este gran poeta americano. único en su estilo.I was reading ‘the life and loves of Frank Harris’ and got to a point where he met Walt Whitman in around 1871. Walt was in the obscure poverty phase that so many writers end in and since I didn’t recall the name I looked him up and then downloaded this e-book to see what I’d missed. The ‘poems’ are preceded by lots of later peoples’ opinions about Walt Whitman’s work and have ploughed though them and into Walt’s work, I still haven’t got to the key piece I want to read. I just wish these works were presented to us in the order in which Walt published them: that would be a better way to understand him. He doesn’t write verse – nothing rhymes – it’s rhythm and to my mind I would better understand his material if I knew how old he was when each piece was published, what came before it and what after. The context is, I think, going to be more relevant to his works than it might be for other writers, but to do that I’d have to establish the chronology outside of this presentation. So much simpler if the publisher had done it.

⭐Whitman speaks viscerally with flights of ideas and you either like him or not. Read it for yourself and see what you think

⭐This edition would probably be a good showcase for Whitman’s material but for the fact that (as with all too many collections of verse made available in the Kindle store) somebody has been in such a great rush to get the book out there that they’ve spared no time to put in proper line breaks and arrange the verse so that it looks the way the poet intended and not like a block of prose. (Yes, I know Whitman’s verse does have unusually long lines… But even he wouldn’t have approved of this.)

⭐Who wouldn’t be delighted to find the public domain list of FREE classic literature. This is fantastic. All the titles I’ve always wanted to read and for free – this is my kind of kindle heaven. I love the way they arrive on your kindle, they’re so quick, it’s like magic. Thank you public domain!

⭐A good book.
