In the context of his life, these poems ar a ca great chronicle, and you will appreciate them more if you have at least a perspective of time and issues.Let me digress a moment with a short bio. Wikipedia writes about Mao: Mao Zedong (December 26, 1893 – September 9, 1976) (also Mao Tse-tung) was a Chinese Marxist military and political leader and philosopher, who led the Communist Party of China (CPC) to victory against the Kuomintang (KMT) in the Chinese Civil War, and served as leader of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. Mao is also recognized as a poet and calligrapher.The introduction of the “Poems of Mao Tse-Tung” says “Mao’s poetry is an intense political-military autobiography. This is a great summary of the entire book of poems. You will learn what it was like for him to live through the battles and to grow from a young man as a student into a military leader and political leader with great power. As far as the poetry goes, it is nothing that will move you based on words along, but it can be a very informative read.The best part of this book are the “Notes” that preceed many of the poems. These notes give a sense of context and shed light on where Mao was and what was happening. In fact, you may find the notes more enlightening than the actual poems.
