Description

Two things alone I long for: first, that when I die I may leave the Roman people free…and second, that each person’s fate may reflect the way he has behaved towards his country.’Cicero (106-43 BC) was the greatest orator of the ancient world and a leading politician of the closing era of the Roman republic. This book presents nine speeches which reflect the development, variety, and drama of his political career, among them two speeches from his prosecution of Verres, a corrupt and cruel governor of Sicily; four speeches against the conspirator Catiline; and the Second Philippic, the famous denunciation of Mark Antony which cost Cicero his life. Also includedare On the Command of Gnaeus Pompeius, in which he praises the military successes of Pompey, and For Marcellus, a panegyric in praise of the dictator Julius Caesar. These new translations preserve Cicero’s rhetorical brilliance and achieve new standards of accuracy. A general introduction outlines Cicero’s public career, and separate introductions explain the political significance of each of the speeches. Together with its companion volume, Defence Speeches, this edition provides an unparalleled sampling of Cicero’s oratorical achievements.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The commentaries are extensive and highly relevant, I liked the selection of speeches is, and the quality of the Kindle edition is exemplary. One has to understand though that there is plenty of competent commentary on these speeches to be had at nearly zero expense elsewhere. So, what you are buying is really just the Kindle edition and the refreshing modern tone of the commentaries. I really liked both.

⭐a must read if you ask me! I don’t love classics, but the rhetorical technique covered in Cicero’s speeches are such a must if you want to be a great orator/public speaker/speech giver/writer

⭐How could anyone dislike Cicero? He was incomparable. I read him just to relax and to reeducate myself. There is nothing more I can add.

⭐In this wonderful series, some of Cicero’s very important political speeches are included. To understand our Republic and our form of government, Cicero’s political observations are quite germane. The translator is competent. The translation pleasing and astute in its elocutions.

⭐Cicero’s “Political Speehes” is an amazing example of the ability and importance of speaking in Roman society. Cicero gives insight into the internal conflict going on at the time while attempting to save Rome. He may come off slightly pompous at times, but he deserves it after such well articulated and informative speeches.

⭐I really like the translations by OWC of ancient texts, but the fact that there are no hyperlinks to the endnotes as in the Penguin kindle editions makes reading a chore, especially when dealing with kindle’s location system. It is often necessary to consult the endnotes when reading ancient texts and adding hyperlinks would vastly improve these kindle editions.

⭐I bought this book when I was still in college, over ten years ago & I never got around to it. Then this year I started reading up on the Catiline Conspiracy & I was hooked. Cicero could talk circles around modern politicians, & his tricks & strategies in his oratory & rhetoric really expose the way modern media tries to manipulate us (they use the same tricks he did over 2000 years ago). Read this book, you’ll learn a bunch, & if you are anything like me, you’ll get a kick out of his flare & style.

⭐no problem

⭐Excellent and thorough translation. Readable too!

⭐The speeches in this volume are translated clearly but with sympathy towards the original Latin. The forewards to the whole book and to each speech or set of speeches are very helpful. The reader will get more out of it, though, if he/she has some understanding of Roman politics to start with.
