Description

Karl Popper is not, as yet anyway, a household name among the educated, and this fact requires explanation. In this book, Bryan Magee gives a bold, clear outline of Popper’s thought which exhibits its systematic unity.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The best way to express my view of this lucid, mind-expanding masterpiece, that every scientist and doctor must read, is by saying of all the people in the world the person I would most like to have dinner with is Bryan Magee.

⭐A clear and concise review Popper’s most important contributions to scientific and political thought. Completely relevant to today’s era of fake news and pseudoscience.

⭐Well written, and in-depth on an outstanding thinker of our time

⭐Very good treatment of the subject

⭐YES!! Very happy with all aspects of the order.

⭐First read this as a student in London in the ‘80’s, decided to order a new copy…and it is even better now, having lived a few more decades. Magee is a wonderful writer, making Popper’s sometime complex ideas seem more understandable. Great read.

⭐The late Sir Karl R Popper has been hailed by professional colleagues as the most formidable living critic of Marxism; as the greatest philosopher of science there has ever been; as a thinker whose influence is acknowledged by men of action (eg George Soros) as well as by an almost bewildering variety of scholars – and yet, he remained comparatively unknown to a wider audience. This book is a lucid, based on close study and deep understanding. It is a superb and much needed book. It is a little masterpiece of clarity. This is the perfect pocket guide to a thinker whose importance it is impossible to overestimate. Magee does an excellent job of placing Popper’s view of science within the wider context of his metaphysics – especially his picture of the evolution of man as a problem solver.

⭐I bought a new copy of this book to replace one I had bought twenty years ago. This new copy has been printed by Amazon, not HarperCollins and is of low quality, like a photocopy would be, with various lines of text that are far from horizontal and various sections where the print is much fainter than desired. Plus the cover is lightweight, colourless and greasy. Yes, the book is cheap, and , yes, I was happy when I first ordered it, but I will be more careful in the future to understand what the word “reprint edition” means as this copy will not last two years, let alone twenty.

⭐Fantastically sharp and pithy explanation of Popper’s writing by Bryan Magee. Seen some of Magee’s TV interviews and he can translate complex philosophy into plain English. This book rapidly covers all Popper’s key texts and is a good introduction to his ideas.

⭐It would be insulting to call Bryan Magee a populariser of philosophy, as he has written a magisterial and influential book on Schopenhauer, and he has an unparalleled ability to distill the essence of a philosopher’s work and interrogate him or her on it as he does in the books based on the famous BBC series. This introduction to Popper is amongst his best and one is not surprised to find that Popper himself contributed to, and endorsed it.

⭐I was recently introduced to Karl popper. I wanted to know where to start and this book was suggested to me. The book is not an easy , bedtime, read. It could be the layout and the lack of clear paragraphing the main problem. But it could also be the attempt to explain three books in 100 pages.I have a fair understanding of Popper stand on science , but his arguments with Marx and Plato were not clearly laid out and I was totally lost by the end of the last chapter.

⭐Magee’s love of communicating philosophy knew no bounds.
