Description

This second edition textbook offers a practical introduction to probability for undergraduates at all levels with different backgrounds and views towards applications. Calculus is a prerequisite for understanding the basic concepts, however the book is written with a sensitivity to students’ common difficulties with calculus that does not obscure the thorough treatment of the probability content. The first six chapters of this text neatly and concisely cover the material traditionally required by most undergraduate programs for a first course in probability. The comprehensive text includes a multitude of new examples and exercises, and careful revisions throughout. Particular attention is given to the expansion of the last three chapters of the book with the addition of one entirely new chapter (9) on ’Finding and Comparing Estimators.’ The classroom-tested material presented in this second edition forms the basis for a second course introducing mathematical statistics.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I used this product for a college class and wish it had more examples. If you find yourself needing this book, prepare to dig to find more examples online

⭐No available solutions for these problems make it very difficult to check whether or not you are correct. The Kindle version of this book had entire sections missing as well as some sections that were completely different from the hardcover version of the book. The content itself was not that great at explaining concepts, and overall I had to rely on external sources to learn the concepts presented.

⭐I am not sure exactly who else reviewed this book. The concepts presented seem straight forward. Questions at the end of each section are challenging, the biggest issue with this book is the lack of feedback for its readers. There is not a single solution or answer in this entire book. So you can practice examples and chapter questions all day long and never really know if your doing anything correctly.

⭐This book is concise, and a nice introduction of the basics of probability and statistics. The concepts are followed by many examples. I use it as a handbook when I need to review my statistics knowledge and find formula. Highly recommended for people new to the subject.
