⭐This is the only book I have found that talks about Hamiltonian systems on Banach spaces rather than just on finite dimensional Euclidean space. One difference between finite and infinite dimensions is that we have to be precise about what we mean by a bilinear form being nondegenerate and thus what we mean by a symplectic form. Even though people often speak about Hamiltonian partial differential equations, scarcely anyone doing PDE actually uses the genuine structures of symplectic forms and Hamiltonian flows, and thus talking about Hamiltonian PDE is almost a slogan rather than a description of structures that are being used. This book covers the basic objects of Hamiltonian systems: symplectic forms, Hamiltonian vector fields, Poisson brackets, the Lie derivative, flows, Noether’s theorem, the coadjoint representation.Even if one is mostly interested in finite dimensional symplectic manifolds, I think this would be a pleasant book to work through for someone who cares strongly about structures, because it would make you aware when you were using the manifold being finite dimensional and would make you avoid coordinates whenever you could. This is similar to how working with arbitrary vector spaces forces you to use structures and avoid coordinates more than you need to when working with R^n.Chernoff and Marsden give too few detailed examples of how explicitly to write PDE in the formalism of infinite dimensional Hamiltonian system. It would be a great contribution to knowledge for a learner to write out this formalism for nonlinear Schrödinger equations and post this on a website, and I would enjoy reading any examples people tell me about.
