Description

This book introduces quantum field theory, together with its most important applications to cosmology and astroparticle physics, in a coherent framework. The path integral approach is employed right from the start, and the use of Green functions and generating functionals is illustrated first in quantum mechanics and then in scalar field theory. Massless spin one and two fields are discussed on an equal footing, and gravity is presented as a gauge theory in closeanalogy with the Yang-Mills case. Concepts relevant to modern research such as helicity methods, effective theories, decoupling, or the stability of the electroweak vacuum are introduced. Various applications such as topological defects, dark matter, baryogenesis, processes in external gravitationalfields, inflation and black holes help students to bridge the gap between undergraduate courses and the research literature.

⭐This is an absolute gem of a text. Ive gone through what seems like every textbook on QFT and this has the most diverse set of topics. This book certainly does not serve as a complete introduction to the subject (not like peskin&schroeder does) but is geared towards a more general understanding for those whove taken QFT 1 and 2 and as an introduction to MANY topics in QFTWhat i love most is that topics such as the following are included: topological defects, thermal field theory, phase transistions, instantons, axions, anomalies, gravity as a gauge theory, a section on modified gravity(!), baryogenesis, thermal relics, cosmological models, QFT in curved spacetime, inflation, black holes, and cosmological constant considerationsThese all have their own chapters/sections after ALL of QFT 1 and 2 are covered (1 and 2 being classical field theory, QED, yang mills, symmetry breaking, higgs physics, partons, quarks, etc! It’s very impressive just how much Kacherlriess has fit into just 528 pages (also end of chapter exercises and problems along with worked examples sprinkled throughout!). In this regard it feels like a more detailed version of Tony Zee’s classic “QFT in a nut”.What’s more is the quality of the book! The pages are semi-glossy, thick, and crisp. The figures are nice and it simply feels nice to read or peruse. The only complaint i can muster is the lack of wide margins (i like to take notes inside the margins in my books)I suspect that this text should become a “go to” text for students beginning graduate studies and as a companion to texts like P&S. The goal of the author was a QFT text for astrophysics studenta but i feel it goes beyond this achieved goal.If youre a student in high energy physics, astrophysics, or just an interested self learner then this is well worth the investment.

⭐The approach to the quantum field theory is modern, starting from the very beginning from the path integral framework, which is developed taking care of the passages with great detail. The mathematics for general relativity is developed as well.A great deal of advanced arguments (QFT, symmetries, phase transition, gravity as a gauge theory, cosmological models, baryogenesis, black holes and so on) are addressed in a very logical way, allowing the reader to gain a very clear picture without sacrificing the mathematical rigor.Several connection between gravity and QFT through analogies based on the gauge field theory are discussed. It has also to be mentioned that the math formalism is developed in-depth, so that the book is not only for researchers but also for an advanced self-study.A must have. It cannot deserve less than five stars.
