Description

Three key aspects of quantum gravity are considered in this book: phenomenology, potential experimental aspects and foundational theory. The phenomenology is the treatment of metric quantum fluctuations as torsional curves that deviate from classical expectations. This leads to possible experimental configurations that may detect such fluctuations. Most of these proposed experiments are quantum optical measurements of subtle quantum gravity effects in the interaction of photons and atoms. The foundational discussions attempt to find an substratum to string theories, which are motivated by the phenomenological treatment. Quantum gravity is not the quantization of general relativity, but is instead the embedding of quantum theory and gravitation into a more fundamental field theoretic framework.

⭐The first thing to point out is that although, by coincidence, my last name is the same as Lawrence B. Crowell’s, we are not related as far as I know. I have never met him. This book has an impressive title, it looks like it’s published by a legitimate publisher, and the two authors claim impressive-sounding academic credentials. Let’s analze some of these claims.Lawrence B. Crowell claims to be affiliated with the “Alpha Institute of Advanced Study” in Budapest. This institute does not actually appear to exist, except in Mr. Crowell’s imagination. There is also an “Alpha Institute for Advanced Studies” (note the “for” and plural “Studies”), run by Myron W. Evans, who has written his own book in collaboration with Mr. Crowell, published by the same publisher. At one time, Evans was able to publish a series of papers in a junk journal called Foundations of Physics Letters. These papers made a number of crackpot claims, such as disproof of Einstein’s theory of relativity and propagation of electromagnetic forces at infinite speed. When the journal was rolled into Foundations of Physics, under a new and well known editor, Gerard ‘t Hooft, ‘t Hooft felt compelled to solicit three papers debunking Evans’ ideas, and to write an editorial disassociating the journal from them.Crowell says inside the book that certain portions of it were written by Robert Betts, of the UMass Boston math department. This might give the impression that Betts was on the faculty at UMass. In fact, Betts received an undergraduate degree from UMass in 2002, three years before the date of this book. Finally, there is the question of the credibility of the publisher, World Scientific, Singapore. My opinion of its credibility is pretty low, since it also published the book that Crowell co-authored with the kook Evans. It also seems unlikely that Crowell’s editor at World Scientific had sufficient expertise to judge the merit of the book, since the book is not on chemistry, but it is listed as being part of the “World Scientific Series in Contemporary Chemical Physics.” In fact, the book does not appear to have been touched by an editor at all, since it is full of mangled sentences. As to the contents of the book, Crowell has managed to stir together a lot of fancy terminology in a manner that might fool the uninitiated into believing that he was really doing cutting-edge research. The book is actually nonsense. For example, he has a section titled “Godel’s Theorem in Quantum Mechanics,” which shows that he has no real understanding of Godel’s incompleteness theorems, or why they have essentially no relevance in physics.
