Description
Acclaimed as “excellent” (Nature) and “very original and refreshing” (Physics Today), this collection of self-contained studies is geared toward advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Its broad selection of topics includes the Mössbauer effect, many-body quantum mechanics, scattering theory, Feynman diagrams, and relativistic quantum mechanics.Author Harry J. Lipkin, a well-known teacher at Israel’s Weizmann Institute, takes an unusual approach by introducing many interesting physical problems and mathematical techniques at a much earlier point than in conventional texts. This method enables students to observe the physical implications and useful applications of quantum theory before mastering the formalism in detail, and it provides them with new mathematical tools at an earlier stage for use in subsequent problems.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐The greatest merit of Lipkin’s book is a subtle and profound analysis of Mossbauer effect. In addition, the book presents rather difficult and advanced problems in Quantum and Relativistic Physics with a superb, disconcerting easiness. It is a real pleasure to follow Lipkin’s “elementary” approaches through the pages of this book. Clarity in deep, complex questions, a sure hand in conducting the presentation, this is really enchanting.M Apostol, Professor of Theoretical Phyiscs
⭐Old fashioned physics, well written, a must for your reference library.
⭐This wonderful book introduces some additional topics that are seldom discussed in many QM books (or at least not discussed in the way the author does). The book starts with a nice review of photons that somehow reminded me the book by Baym. Mossbauer effect is then used to study momentum transfer in bound systems and is a great way to show how to use quantum mechanics in realistic situations.Time dependent perturbation theory is introduced in a lively manner and many body qm is approached from second quantization since the beggining, making it a really interesting alternative to other books.Specially worthy is the treatment of Feynman diagrams and relativist qm which ends in a very readable discussion of the Poincare group. If you add to this the fact that second quantization is used extensively through the book the reader should be throughly prepared to tackle qft after reading this book.As far as the level regards, I think that anyone who has studied quantum mechanics at the level of Griffiths, Gasiorowicz, Liboff or Fleissbach is fully prepared to tackle this book, it only requires a decent knowledge of elementary qm topics like Schrodinger equation and simple solutions in 1d,3d, Dirac notation a little bit of angular momentum and time independent perturbation theory. Considering the low price of the book it really should be on the shelf of every serious qm student.
⭐This is a classic, it is a little bit old but nevertheless it teachings are still present and important for those that want to see Quantum Mechanics in action.
