⭐QUANTUM MECHANICS PRINCIPLESOlavo Leopoldino da Silva Filho (L.F.S. Olavo, as he is also knownin the literature) brings to a broad audience his “QuantumMechanics: Principles,New perspectives, extensions andInterpretations,” a book devoted to the foundations of quantummechanics. The presentation is marked by a consistent (logical)structure, supported by experimental results.From a formal point of view, some aspects are in order to beconsidered. (i) The presentation starts by setting forth fewpostulates, providing a description for subatomic systems. Theapproach can be seen as the foundations of a general theory ofmotion, establishing a common theoretical background for classicaland quantum mechanics. This background is a generalized mechanicalstructure; not a reduction of quantum mechanics to classicalmechanics, or vice-versa, as one can find in many attempts in theliterature. Most of those attempts are indeed analyzed in thetext, providing a detailed and comprehensible account ofphilosophical and historical discussions about the foundations ofquantum and classical mechanics. This aspect of the book givesrise to an overview of many formulations of quantum mechanics,that is hardly found together in the literature. Surely, this isby itself an outstanding achievement in the book. (ii) Thechapters follow a pedagogical way, foreseen always examples andapplication in physics. For accomplishing such an aspect, therequired mathematical background is only at the level ofundergraduate courses in linear algebra, stochasticity andclassical and quantum mechanics. (v) The construction emphasizesnon-relativistic systems, although, a generalization torelativistic theories is also addressed. This opens manypossibilities for new developments, which are pointed out to thereaders. (vi) The book uses the most familiar language forphysicists: the notion of particles. However, due to thisgenerality, the concept of field can be also accommodated, from asemantics point of view at least, in such a framework, inparticular when the path integral formalism is discussed.It is important to mention that, L.F.S. Olavo is not only aphysicist working in the foundations of quantum mechanics, but heis also a logicist (see for instance the book in logic:Inferências Lexicais e Interpretação de Redes de Predicados, byJulio Cabrera e Olavo Leopoldino da Silva Filho, EdUnB-Finatec,Brasília, 2012). This allows him to write his “Quantum Mechanics:Principles” in a sharp logical way, which a large audience canimmediately grasp. Furthermore, being mainly a physicist, hisaxiomatic construction is supported at all levels by using anexpedient mean of physicists: the experimental results.In short, due to a pedagogical presentation, practical applications anda consistent framework, the book is of interest not only to students andresearchers working in physics, including those dedicated tophilosophical aspects of mechanics, but also to one involved withmathematics or with new areas of quantum engineering.Ademir SantanaProfessor of PhysicsUniversity of Brasilia
