⭐This work is one of the great classics in the field of quantum optics. It has been cited in a hundred (or more) books and a lot of papers. Most researchers in the field would have seen the title.Although some contents of this book is already obsolete, but it is still a useful reference. There are plenty of useful formulae. The calculation processes are described carefully and in detail. Especially, the chapter “Operator Algebra” is really overwhelming. A copy of the book is worth keeping in your bookshelf.Unfortunately, it has been OOP for several years. I hope it to be republished in some e-book formats. I suppose that Wiley still has the proofs of the title in electronic data. The book consists of chapters as follows. – Dirac Formulation of Quantum Mechanics – Elementary Quantum Systems – Operator Algebra – Quantization of the Electromagnetic Field – Interaction of Radiation with Matter – Quantum Theory of Damping–Density Operator Methods – Quantum Theory of Damping–Langevin Approach – Lamb’s Semiclassical Theory of a Laser – Statistical Properties of a Laser – Appendices

⭐I give this book high marks for its excellent chapters on the quantization of the radiation field and on the interaction of radiation with matter. Otherwise it suffers from the usual physics weakness of being more mathematical than physical. For example the author blunders by writing that the length-gauge rate for spontaneous emission scales as the cubic power of the frequency of the emitted photon. But the squared modulus of the length-gauge radiative-dipole matrix element scales as the reciprocal of the frequency, such that the net scaling of the rate goes as the square of the frequency or equivalently as the fourth power of the atomic number in a hydrogen-like ion. This error shows the author’s lack of experience in practical quantum mechanics. Physics departments used to offer courses in physics without calculus for students who were weak in mathematics. It appears that today, with the collapse of the price of theory relative to experiment, we are offered mathematics without physics.
