Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐At 70, I am working on my first quilt made up of squares of cloth I have used to make my grandchildren their “Granny Clothes.” I have sewn for over 55 years, but I had no idea where to start with quilt construction…a real Dummy! This delightful publication has taken me from “this is thread” to “choose batting that is appropriate,” to “you have completed your first quilt!” With great care, the author takes you from one step to another. I love it! I would recommend this one to anyone, any age, who wants to begin such a project. GREAT HELP!
⭐This book is very thorough. I actually wish I had purchased it because if I had I would have been able to shop with more knowledge of what I needed to purchase. I would recommend this for anyone that wants to quilt because it has answers to the questions that every beginner wants and needs to know. My only thing I wish was included in this book was QAYG or Quilting As You Go because some people like myself don’t have the kind of money to purchase a sewing machine with a large throat and learning how to QAYG would be easy and just as much fun to do. Don’t get me wrong though because I really do benefit from this book and I appreciate it. I just feel that readers should be made aware of and taught how to QAYG. I have heard that it’s great for beginners. I will just be applying knowledge from the book and internet groups to make my quilts.
⭐The books follow an established format that make any subject very easy to learn. Quilting for Dummies is written by someone who is a seamstress and a quilter herself, so we benefit from her experience. From the tools needed, first steps through your first quilt project, the book gives hints and solutions along the way with basic patterns.
⭐I have just received my book & I’m very disappointed. I had wanted a book on quilting – however, even though the cover said “Quilting for Dummies” the title page inside said “Lead Generation for Dummies” the content was strictly on marketing, social media, websites, There was absolutely nothing in it on quilting except 2 pictures in the center of the book showing a couple of quilts in supposedly Chapter 15. When turning to Chapter 15, it was about forming a Sales Team and Inside Sales. It was about sales and quotas.
⭐I did not want to be unfair to the author and lower the rating because of my own ability to ‘get it’. I read the book all the way through and Ms. Fall is a very entertaining writer and the book has much information that probably will be useful to me once I get the hang of it and I get my first quilt made. Right now I am a complete novice. I have never even attempted to make a quilt…never cut out a square let alone any of the other shapes in some of the remarkable quilts you see pictures of. I do own a sewing machine and I did sew quite a bit when my children were younger so it’s not that I am unfamiliar with sewing machines and patterns. I myself just need very detailed, graphic instructions and something more basic (read simple) to start. I do not feel after reading this book that I have the information I need to just get right in there and make a quilt. I did happen to find basic quilt instructions…quilting 101…on line at something called ‘instructables’. Perhaps if there are others in the same pre beginning stages as I am that would be helpful to you also.
⭐It is often a difficult task when writing a how-to book as you need to approach all levels of expertise meaning you have to balance the information to teach both novice and expert. The Quilting for Dummies book does just that as the author Cheryl Fall has written a delightful book that is educational without sounding condescending. The book covers how to select and prepare fabric; how to layout your quilt design; how to prepare and cut blocks; and how to finish your quilt using different stitching techniques. There is a whole section about applique quilting that deals with the different styles of applique. The author covers hand piecing and machine piecing too.Highly recommend.
⭐I have just recently – last 3 mos, started first quilting project. I have received much advice from “experts”. I have since, purchased “Quilting For Dummies”. What an eye-opener!! Many questions Cheryl has answered clearly, have helped me tremendously… and there were things the ‘experts’ told me to do were wrong… and I’m thrilled I learned early on!! Thx, Cheryl, for your wonderful book! I’ll be using it often! Even when I become an ‘expert’ … to avoid telling others wrong advice… like the importance of cutting fabric, NOT ripping it. (: Now I no longer have fabric on project that won’t match up due to distortion with ripping!
⭐Arrived in brand new condition as advertised. I have found this to be a helpful source. I am self taught quilter, so I have looked at many videos and websites for information, this book seems to have the tried and true methods. I would recommend
⭐We have a quilting shop in our town and I walk past it all the time.I went in once and brought some nice fabric and was swamped by things I will need to buy and do and this and that from the pros that I went away feeling more confused then when I went in.I brought this book and learnt allot from it, it eases you in slowly and has great wring style. I now have 6 patches all sewn by hand (cant afford sewing machine) and it may not have amazing straight stitching or look pro but I am very proud 🙂
⭐This is the best book for anyone wanting to start quilting from scratch. Author uses clear, easy to understand language combined with detailed pictures and even injects lots of humour to help you remember how and what to do (or what not to do)to avoid mistakes. She tells you what tools you definately need to get started and what you can make yourself or choose to buy later as your confidence and ability improve. Also which fabrics are best for beginners and which to use to get the best results. If you follow this book you will be quilting with confidence in no time. Well done Cheryl – you are a natural teacher and a great inspiration.
⭐This is a good book, however it’s difficult to follow if you are from the UK and use metric measurements. I have to buy fabric in the shops by the metre or centimetre, then follow instructions in the book which are in imperial – very confusing. However the style the book is written in and the most of the instructions seem fine. I say seem as I haven’t started on a quilt yet. It seems this book is written for the US market which is fine, but make that obvious in the book blurb on the website.
⭐exactly what it says on the cover….easy to follow instructions
⭐I know (or knew) nada about quilting and have been trying to learn out of various books. This one pointed out the obvious (not to me !) and saved me a lot of mistakes, especially with machine quilting. well worth the money, I’m looking forward to trying one of the projects in the book very soon.
