Description

One hundred classic stories from the celebrated author of Fahrenheit 451.In this, the first volume of Ray Bradbury’s short stories, some of the author’s finest works are published together, among them ‘Homecoming’, ‘Veldt’, ‘A Sound of Thunder’ and ‘The Long Rain’.Join an ill-fated crew of astronauts pushed to the brink of insanity by the incessant and highly corrosive rain on Venus, a high-tech virtual reality playroom that comes to life with terrible consequences, and a safari company offering tours for the wealthy back in time to the prehistoric era to stalk and kill dinosaurs, resulting in the present they return to being irrevocably altered. This collection is a rare treasure trove of wonder; as apprehensive about technology and the fate of humanity as it is elegiaic of its irrepressible progress. Each story presents an enlightening and poetic facet of Bradbury’s writing, every one as relevant now as when it was first written.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐When Ray Bradbury was at the top of his game there was and is no one who could compare. I mean that literally – No One. Ray had the ability to write fiction that was so much more than a simple story that one reads just to get to the payoff. He had a style that makes multiple readings enjoyable and certain passages absolutely perfect and timeless. In my mind Ray’s work was at an amazing level from the late 40’s all through the late 70’s, an incredible run. After 1980 the work, while still sometimes showing brilliance, dropped off dramatically. Each decade has gotten worse unfortunately. That’s what makes this book particularly wonderful to me. It is 100 of his best stories chosen from his richest creative period. I won’t gush further over specific stories but I will tell you that to me about half of these stories are absolutely perfect and the rest are merely very, very good. I remember picking up the print version of this book in 1980 and I have revisited it many times. Here’s the 2nd best thing about this book. For some reason Ray, currently about 90 years old, has taken an adamant stance against releasing ANY of his work on the Kindle or any e-reader. His curmudgeonly attitude, while not only amusing, is ironic considering how a number of his stories, including his most famous novel Fahrenheit 451, discuss preserving books in any way possible. This one kind of sneaked out against Ray’s wishes. There is basically nothing else of Ray’s available for the Kindle, except for this one perfect collection. And you’re really not supposed to have this, so it’s got a taste of forbidden fruit about it.Here’s a 3rd reason why this is a great book for the Kindle. The print book is a tome and a real monster to read – almost 900 pages. After wrestling with that the Kindle edition is certainly welcome.Despite the high price you might want to pick this one up quickly in case Ray finds out that this is out there!

⭐A wonderful collection of Ray Bradbury’s Stories. It would have been better had it been printed in a Hard Copy Edition.

⭐Ray Bradbury was one of my favourite SF writers when I was a child and a teen. His prose is often poetic, and his imagination is second to none. However …. I have, for the time being, abandoned this book of short stories, for the sole reason that it is now too dated for me to enjoy. I acknowledge him as one if the great late masters of SF –but in this year of 2014 I am too old to get engrossed in stories of a breathable Martian atmosphere, with towns and greenery!Actually, I mourn for that golden time when we believed Venus was a tropical paradise and Mars had water channels. It was great to immerse oneself, as a child, in such stories, because everything was possible! Now we are much older and cynical and we know so much about our solar system’s inhospitable planets, alas!!I’m keeping the stories on my Kindle, and I will probably dip into it again. Just not right now.

⭐I read a lot of Ray Bradbury as a kid. After a long spell of not reading him (and growing up), I returned to his writing via this collection of short stories. I don’t need to tell you how good he is, he’s one of the best. And this collection of his stories is what the Kindle is made for — I haven’t read every single title in the volume yet (there are quite a lot) and I can dip into the collection at any time, it’s always on hand. Perfect.

⭐This collection of short stories is impressive because of Bradbury’s great imagination and prose. As you turn the pages you just don’t know what to expect from the writer’s oceanic views. Stories about vampires are followed by others in which life, love and feelings are poetically dealt with. At times, Bradbury’s choice of words is breathtaking: it’s extremely vivid and foists itself before your eyes.

⭐Great to see so many of my favourites in one place. Having read the stories as a teen (over and over again) it’s been a long time since I’ve ever thought of them. (35 years?).

⭐Ray Bradbury is the master of weaving the short tale and this collection showcases some of his best works. You’ll be whisked away to other worlds, climb inside new minds and re-experience childhood. And if you’re a writer? This collection is a must-have to learn techniques from the master.

⭐Reading one story each night. All brilliant and initiate weird and wonderful dreams! There is one tiny downside though; the book is huge and very heavy, so if reading in bed it can get a little uncomfortable having it on your chest. You quickly forget that though, as you are absorbed into the wonderful mind of Ray Bradbury!

⭐I first discovered Ray Bradbury in the early 70s whilst studying my GCE English Literature and they were classic stories then. This is a great newly published collection of his short stories that have been a joy to re-discover.Bradbury is a master of descriptive, emotive and imaginative writing. The twists and turns in the stories are genius, at times filling you with joy and at other times great sadness but always thrilling in their execution. The other beauty is that at 15 – 20 minutes each the stories are ideal for a quick dip into another world.A final interesting facet is comparing the imagination of Bradbury on the future and to what did actually happen in space travel and future living. Just Buy It !! Cant wait to get Volume 2.

⭐This volume is amazing value, nearly 900pp and I confess I haven’t yet read all the stories. Fahrenheit 451 was my first Bradbury read in the 1960s and I’ve never caught up with his short stories. I’d forgotten just how well he writes. His language is straightforward and simple, but the stories just blow you away. Many are timeless classics and some, bearing in mind when they were written, have proved strangely prophetic. They’re ideal to read with a coffee or on a short journey. Thought provoking, curious and entertaining. I’m really enjoying them all.

⭐I guess few readers will be coming to Ray Bradbury for the first time so will be aware of his short stories being a mix of SciFi, Fantasy and sheer nonsense. But the manner in which he writes this nonsense is just perfect. Some of the stories I already have on other anthologies, which is a bit annoying, but many of them are new to me and the Kindle download is well worth the relatively small cost.He is not for everyone. The stories are old and seem naive to modern versions of the genres, it is the quality of the writing that impresses.

⭐Read some of these before all good and several I have never read before and all of them are just proof that Day Bradbury is a great author now going on to volume 2
