Description

Soon after its publication, Readings in Ancient Greek Philosophy was hailed as the favorite to become the ‘standard’ text for survey courses in ancient philosophy. Nothing on the market touches it for comprehensiveness, accuracy, and readability.* (*APA Newsletter on Teaching Philosophy). Fifteen years on, that prediction has been borne out, and the volume’s preeminence as the leading anthology for the teaching of ancient philosophy still stands. The Fourth Edition features a completely revamped and expanded unit on the Presocratics and Sophists that draws on the wealth of new scholarship published on these fascinating thinkers over the past decade or more. At the core of this unit, as ever, are the fragments themselves–but now in thoroughly revised and, in some cases, new translations by Richard McKirahan and Patricia Curd, among them those of the recently published Derveni Papyrus.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Bought this for my husband and he loves this book. It has so much in it about the Greek philosophers. It is a very thick book and has a lot to digest in it. Great quotes, discussions, and history that is not generally known in regular education manuals on the ancient philosophers. It is interesting to note that these philosophers were able to know and understand that the Earth was round, that atoms existed, that molecules and DNA existed, and some even had supernatural experiences that brought them over the Earth to see the Earth from space. It is all discussed in their writings and how, by their contemplation and inner meditations and outer observations of life, they were able to know so much. Some of these philosophers’ lives ended tragically because their ideas were a threat to the cultural patterns of their time. My husband loves this book and reads it every night. He says it helps him appreciate where we were, how our culture formed its ideas, and it connects the dots of our ancient culture to our modern.

⭐Most of the manuscripts and writings that you will find in this book exist absolutely free online. This book has outstanding merit, however, as they are chronologically listed and are couched in very good scholarship of other people. By purchasing this book, you’re getting a lot more resources at your disposal than if you were to just randomly pick up Aristotle or Plato. Many academic philosophy curriculums do not teach philosophy in the order that it progressed. I feel that this is a profound disservice to students, since almost no dialog in philosophy is ahistorical. Reading this book from cover to cover will correct this error and leave one a lot more enlightened. It sure helped me a bunch, anyway.

⭐Not complete, but a very good into to ancient Greek Philosophy. Covers most of the important major works, but leaves out some of the important ones from Plato and Aristotle. I liked the intro to the pieces that gave historical background to what was going on at the time each was written. It add insight one might not have just reading the works themselves.

⭐I purchased this book as part of my ongoing comparative studies of Western and ancient Indian philosophy. This book is an all-in-one stop. It is thorough and comprehensive. Great value. [But font style and size are difficult to read.]Full disclosure: I’m a peer-reviewed researcher of connections between ancient yoga and modern science, as well as between ancient yoga and the Bible. ~ Sanjay C Patel, SanjayCPatel.com

⭐i purchased this as a textbook for my intro to philosophy class. it was really interesting and i liked that everything was compiled into one book. as a college student who doesnt have much money for books, it is a good choice when learning about multiple philosophers during one semester

⭐This anthology was in its second edition when I was an undergraduate, and now I teach it in my own Introduction to Philosophy course in its fourth. The translations are accessible, the price reasonable, and the texts fun to engage with undergraduates. I’m sticking with Cohen for my introductory courses.

⭐I liked it.

⭐My daughter needed this for college and she had no complaints.

⭐As described

⭐just what I needed
