Mentored by her mother, Miranda has been sewing and creating her own clothing since she could hold a needle. Over time she developed a zest for re-use and heartfelt desire for truly unique design. This ethos is masterfully woven together to recall the forms of yesteryear with an otherworldly edge — a philosophy she calls “neoarchaic.” Miranda’s life has been a bi-coastal artistic evolution. She became active in the alternative arts scene in Boston, where she introduced “living construction,” a live sewing performance piece staged in gallery window fronts. Relocating to San Francisco in 2005, she quickly emerged as a bright new star in a constellation of provocative artist-designers. Her fashion shows are known for their performance-art quality, embodying political, artistic, and personal statements. These shows include Catwalk on the Wild Side (U.N. World Environment Day Gala “Walk the Talk”), Love Fest VIP Event (San Francisco City Hall), and Maker Faire (Swaporamarama and Make magazine). She has also had various individual performance art appearances at Supperclub San Francisco, San Jose Museum of Art, and Burningman. Meander through San Francisco’s Mission-Deco Ghetto neighborhood and you’ll find Miranda reconstructing in the window-front of her boutique, miranda caroligne — a living construction boutique (www.mirandacaroligne.com), 485 14 Street @ Guerrero. You’re sure to be delighted by the local art and design, and step forward with the inspiration to do it yourself!

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I bought this book to look for tips and techniques for upcycling clothes, and I have to say, I’m not sure if the book was worth the money. The tips and techniques discussed in the first few chapters were great. These few chapters were some of the best explanations I’ve seen for the absolute beginner. I really liked how the author explained the different sewing methods, and I like how she demonstrated all the possible stitch styles for each method (hand, machine and serger). Now for the bad. The projects in the book were,in my opinion, really sloppy looking. I agree with a number of the reviewers that the results for these projects look like rags. If I wore any of those outfits in public, either a good Samaritan would take me to the nearest soup kitchen or the police would drag me to the nearest mental institution. These styles may be “on trend” with a subculture in San Francisco, but the styles are just sloppy for the rest of the world. For project ideas, I liked “New Dress a Day” much better.

⭐This is a review for the Kindle version of this book.On the whole, I like this book. The author has a very engaging style of writing and clear instructions. The projects themselves are, well… as the author states, starting points. The projects are designed to inspire the reader and act as a sort of launching pad. I tried a few of the projects with success, but more importantly, I learned techniques that can be applied to future sewing adventures. It would be nice if the author had given more attention to the seam ripper. It’s such a wonderful tool for this sort of sewing. Some hints and tips on how to use it other than to say it’s awfully sharp, could have been included. The kindle format for this book was great. The interactive index, extremely useful. I like the layout and the way the sidebars were smoothly inserted among the text. The pictures and diagrams were clear on my kindle screen (a kindle 3). The only issue I have with the pictures is that they show up on the kindle as ‘tables’ and are too wide for my screen (6″) and cannot be zoomed-in like a regular picture format. I should also mention, this book takes longer to download than other kindle books I’ve bought so far – could be all the pictures.

⭐It is a good book, but only covered items make of knit fabric. I was interested in using some cottons and wool.

⭐I bought this book hoping it would contain some useful tips and nice projects despite some of the bad reviews.Wow, all you reviewers may happily say “I told you so”.I knew going in that I’m not a fan of exposed seams and raw edges but thought that I would still find inspiration for my own use. The only redeeming quality is, as mentioned in a previous review, the basic sewing instructions and one or two of the sweater projects. Hence the two star rating. The other projects I will tuck away for my crazy cat lady days in the future. My favorite being the Surprise Fly Top, where a decent top and a decent pair of pants are melded together to make a Franken-top where the whole collar is just the cut off crotch-to-waist part of the pants sewn to the top as a type of cowl. Even accounting for different taste and style, this just looks bizarre and I imagine very few people could manage to pull off the look convincingly without their sanity being questioned.Fellow stitchers, keep searching, with the increasing popularity of sewing and green living there has to be something better than this on the market.

⭐just what I needed! thank you.

⭐It was OK but nothing new if you have done any sewing

⭐What can I say?.. This is a pretty basic beginners book on the subject matter. There’s nothing to ambitious about it. It shows you the basics of sewing (if you need that). I would recommend this book to complete beginners (people who have never sewn before), and possibly suggest it to those who have an interest but already know how to sew. I didn’t personally use any of the ideas in here, but the projects gave me ideas in how to resolve things that I had already started. I give it a 1 thumb up.

⭐I gave this book away because it was useless.

⭐Fabulous book full of ideas for recon textiles

⭐Full of good information and helpful hints

⭐I didn’t find this book as useful as I had hoped. The techniques are somewhat helpful but the restructuring ideas/designs are not relevant to current styles.

⭐I love this book so inspired I’m gonna start some projectsIt gives you tools to modify your olds ones I am gonna get a new wardrobe without spending so much

⭐It’s alright but not really what I was looking for as far as the topic of reconstruction of clothing goes.
