Description

Capitalism as we know it appears to be coming apart. But as financial institutions stagger and crumble, there is no obvious alternative. There is good reason to believe that, in a generation or so, capitalism will no longer exist: for the simple reason that it s impossible to maintain an engine of perpetual growth forever on a finite planet. Yet faced with this prospect, the knee-jerk reaction is often to cling to what exists because they simply can t imagine an alternative that wouldn t be even more oppressive and destructive. The political imagination seems to have reached an impasse. Or has it? In this collection of essays David Graeber explores a wide-ranging set of topics including political strategy, global trade, debt, imagination, violence, aesthetics, alienation, and creativity. Written in the wake of the anti-globalization movement and the rise of the war on terror, these essays survey the political landscape for signs of hope in unexpected places. At a moment when the old assumption about politics and power have been irrefutably broken the only real choice is to begin again: to create a new language, a new common sense, about what people basically are and what it is reasonable for them to expect from the world, and from each other. In this volume Graeber draws from the realms of politics, art, and the imagination to start this conversation and to suggest that that the task might not be nearly so daunting as we d be given to imagine.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review TINA, they say, there is no alternative. The essence of neoliberalism, David Graeber suggests, is its systematization of depression, its exclusion of all alternatives to an obviously catastrophic system. These stimulating essays rupture the wall of enclosure, push forward, and open paths that lead in hopeful directions. So important. –John Holloway, author of Change The World Without Taking Power About the Author David Graeber is an anarchist, an anthropologist, and a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. He teaches anthropology at Goldsmiths. He is the author of multiple books including Towards an Anthropological Theory of Value and Possibilities: Essays on Hierarchy, Rebellion, and Desire.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The essays appear sublimely interesting, and if you are familiar with Graeber nothing more needs to be said. The physical product leaves something to be desired. The book is POD (Print on Demand) and of adequate quality as far as that goes; the cover is poorly printed and the feel of the ink somewhat unpleasant to the touch (I shall have to fashion a jacket). Possibly a consequence of the mode of production, Amazon lists the page count as 120 which can only be gotten counting the blank pages at the back; pagination-wise the text ends at p. 114. This is trivial stuff in contrast with the “intellectual content.” I take it on faith—after a cursory glance—that the writing is good.

⭐Graeber’s book Debt was deeply researched and I loved the approach.I’ve skimmed some of his others book but actually sat down to read this book.I agree with many main principles, but they are also as old as mankind itself. The greatest problem for me is that it rambles…Whoever edited this book was sleeping on the job. I’m sure it could’ve been a great book, IF ¾ was cut.

⭐good stuff interresting but man get somerbody to edit I mean f.grammer some thing may be boy oh boy what a drag to go through somer off set.Good thoughts of other people put into bad writing to make it digestable to the average infuntile american inte lick tual.Happy weeding IT IS Sping isnt it> Melanie

⭐I cannot help myself, I love David Graeber. Go ahead do yourself a favor and buy this short collection of essays.

⭐The book outlines movements in ideas and activism up to 2010. So, a helpful text in understanding the background to activism in the last decade. The layout of the book is mystifying. I can’t emphasise this enough. There is a lot of reading and rereading needed on almost every page. Regardless, there are essays here that I will refer to again.

⭐I believe most of these essays are available on the anarchist library for free, but this collection is absolutely darling. RIP to David Graeber- one of the best writers and theorists of our lifetime

⭐A really fascinating and inspiring read. I have only one complaint and that is that the text is absolutely full of typos – and I mean on almost every page. There are even headings in bold print that have typos. Don’t the publishers believe in proofreading ? – perhaps they just can’t be bothered. Very sloppy. It actually detracts from the ideas somewhat because it gives the impression that the whole project has been rushed. A pity because the authors ideas really deserve attention.

⭐A very inspiring and encouraging perspective.
