Description

The bestselling author and activist “has delivered another impressive argument that the U.S. flouts international law when it finds it convenient to do so” (Publishers Weekly). In this still-timely classic, Noam Chomsky argues that the real “rogue” states are the United States and its allies. Chomsky turns his penetrating gaze toward US involvement in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America to trace the enduring combined effects of military domination and economic imperialism on these regions. “Noam Chomsky is like a medic attempting to cure a national epidemic of selective amnesia . . . [Rogue States is] a timely guide to the tactics that the powerful employ to keep power concentrated and people compliant . . . Chomsky’s work is crucial at a time when our empire perpetually disguises its pursuit of power under the banners of ‘aid,’ ‘humanitarian intervention,’ and ‘globalization.’ Americans have to begin deciphering the rhetoric. Chomsky’s a good place to start.” —The Village Voice “World-famous MIT linguist Chomsky has long kept up a second career as a cogent voice of the hard left, excoriating American imperialism, critiquing blinkered journalists and attacking global economic injustice.” —Publishers Weekly “Nothing escapes [Chomsky’s] attention . . . [Rogue States is] wonderfully lucid.” —PeaceWork Praise for Noam Chomsky “Chomsky is a global phenomenon . . . perhaps the most widely read voice on foreign policy on the planet.” —The New York Times Book Review “The conscience of the American people.” —New Statesman “One of the radical heroes of our age . . . a towering intellect . . . powerful, always provocative.” —The Guardian

⭐Mr. Chomsky is a gem, and I learnt a lot from this book. It’s not an easy read for me, but one can find it beneficial if you take the time and patience to read through it. Recommended.

⭐In Rogue States Nom Chomsky is a harsh critic and has highlighted the discrepancies in the United States foreign policy. His definition of rogue states has two uses: a propagandistic, which applies to assorted enemies and a literal use that applies to states that do not regard themselves bound by international norms. In the post WWII era these norms were defined and developed by the United Nations charter, by International Court of Justice decisions and by various conventions and treatise signed by states. After the end of cold war the U.S being the sole super power, international law today is less regarded by the U.S than at any other time. This was especially highlighted by the Clinton administration when Madam Albright informed the U.N that the U.S will act Multilaterally when possible and Unilaterally when necessary. In foreign Affairs journal, Samuel Huntington warns that Washington is treading a dangerous course in the eyes of most of the world he suggests, the U.S is becoming the rogue super power and considered the single greatest threat to their societies. In the same essay he predicts that coalitions may arise to counter the balance of the super power.Chomsky states that on one hand the U.S took stern action against the deplorable invasion of Kuwait by Iraq but stayed silent when Indonesia (its ally) under dictator Suharto annexed East Timor. In this Indonesian invasion within a few years tens of thousands of people died. The U.S also armed Turkey a NATO ally but didnt question their repression on the Kurdish minority. After the Gulf War Washington publicly supported a revolution from within to overthrow Saddam Hussein but their actions were contrary to their speech. In March 1991 immediately after the war, the state department refused to have any dealing with the Iraqi democratic opposition and they were denied access to media. While Saddam was decimating the southern opposition, the U.S army aware of this action refused to permit rebelling military officers access to captured Iraqi arms. Ahmed Chalabi the London based head of the Iraqi National Congress said The United States, covered by the fig leaf of non-interference in Iraqi affairs, s waiting for Saddam to butcher the insurgents in the hope that he can be overthrown later by a suitable officer. On March 2, 1998 Foreign Minister prince Saud re-iterated that the greatest de-stabilizing element in the Middle East and the cause of all the problems in the region is Israels policy towards the Palestinians and the U.S support for it, which might activate popular forces that the Saudi Arabia greatly fears, as this will undermine its legitimacy as guardian of Islamic holy places including Dome of the Rock in East Jerusalem. While a fair treatment to the Palestinians were denied the U.S fought hard so that Afghanistan is liberated from Russian occupation; the U.S also supported the independence of the Central Asian states from Russia.

⭐It is easy to think Chomsky is putting down the USA. Instead he is show how the media is manipulated to use our government for private purposes.

⭐I don’t remember ever receiving this

⭐Noam Chomsky’s work here is eye opening for the reader with a narrow or biased view of US involvement in international affairs to date. Rogue States is my introduction to Chomsky and his position and discontent with US rhetoric leaps from the pages. That asside, he’s backed up all statements with specific sources and other reading materials for the reader who wants to form his own opinions. I say Bravo!

⭐Among many other insights, he relates how the “liberal” Kennedy deployed chemical weapons in Vietnam – and mostly in the South, not the North. He goes on to argue that “the right on humanitarian intervention , if it exists, is premised on the good faith of those intervening & that good faith must be judged not in rhetoric but in their record, in particular their record of adherence to international law, World Court decisions, etc.” Furthermore, that “it’s very easy to see another’s crimes . . . but on a moral standard, that’s not very impressive. A minimum of moral decency would be to shine the spotlight on oneself with candor & truth. Elementary decency would then require action for the benefit of the victims and the future victims of the causes of the crimes are not honestly addressed.” Finally, he points out how each of us pays taxes to subsidize Lockheed Martin & further pay when the government grants them guaranteed loans.”

⭐I read this book several years ago and I have to state that Noam Chomsky’s “Rogue States” is a great prequel to his other two books “Hegemony or Survival” and “Failed States.”This book (which is a collection of essays) is required reading because Professor Chomsky places U.S. policies on the insalubrious pike of moral turpitude.I find it awfully strange that most far Right-Wing individuals aren’t the least bit simpatico with some of his viewpoints since they refer to him, as a “New World Order Shill” when in reality Chomsky’s views are more conservative than they’re willing to give him credit for. As a matter of fact he’s more of a political/world affairs dissector whose syllogisms leads to the axiomatic conclusions of the problems we face today. What makes Chomsky’s worldviews viable to the overall argument is that he’s excellent at pointing out what’s cantankerously amiss in world affairs, and helps individuals to become cognizant of the facts needed in solving our globalization problems.I (like many others) wish that Chomsky would name names of institutions and the families running them, and I totally disagree with his gemütlich outlook insofar as the United Nations is concerned. But if Chomsky were to engage in fingering too many rapacious criminals (in the banking world) we wouldn’t receive the valuable information he provides. In the end it is up to us to research, investigate and discover who owns these corporations and to confront them by taking more of an initiative in our republic. However, I do feel that a one world global government is dangerous in the long scheme of things, but I do believe the world needs a mediator, and the U.N. could fill that role if the U.S. and the G8 didn’t so heavily influence it.In the book Chomsky alludes to the Colombian drug trade and how the agricultural businesses are hardly producing food for the subsidence of the Colombian people, which of course this endeavor continues to metastasize into the largest cocaine smuggling operations in the world. Which, is causing famine like conditions and is also creating economic strangulation throughout the countryside.Chomsky also discusses East Timor, the Middle East, Kosovo, and more. He also cites international law and how the United States, and Russia continue to circumvent it.I would love to elaborate on everything in this book, but for me to accomplish that I’d have to write a hundred page essay. There’s a plethora of info in this book that can’t be dismissed, whether you lean on the Right, the Left or dead Center this book is an indictment of the Clinton administration tenfold.A must read.

⭐Good read.

⭐The Brilliant Noam Chomsky talking simply, eloquently and devastaingly about Americaand other Imperialist powers and the effecttheir irresponsibilty has on the rest of the world

⭐Chomsky exposes the truth about American foreign policy ! Compulsive reading in the dangerous world we live in.

⭐A brillant exposure into the insight of US policies from an alternative angle. The discussion of NEW WORLD ORDER is throughly entertained from conception to conclusion. Good analysis of US’s backstabing of a number of States namely Indonesia – East Timor etc. A MUST READ !!!!!!!
