Description

From an award-winning historian of ancient Rome, a concise and comprehensive history of the fighting forces that created the Roman EmpireRoman warfare was relentless in its pursuit of victory. A ruthless approach to combat played a major part in Rome’s history, creating an empire that eventually included much of Europe, the Near East and North Africa. What distinguished the Roman army from its opponents was the uncompromising and total destruction of its enemies. Yet this ferocity was combined with a genius for absorbing conquered peoples, creating one of the most enduring empires ever known. In Roman Warfare, celebrated historian Adrian Goldsworthy traces the history of Roman warfare from 753 BC, the traditional date of the founding of Rome by Romulus, to the eventual decline and fall of Roman Empire and attempts to recover Rome and Italy from the “barbarians” in the sixth century AD. It is the indispensable history of the most professional fighting force in ancient history, an army that created an Empire and changed the world.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Goldsworthy is a giant among Roman historians. This text is short and lacking in detail. Not the same quality of his other work. If you are new to Roman history, this book is for you. Otherwise, save your money. Disappointing.

⭐Excellent analysis from a professional military perspective. Although written some time ago the analysis and discussions are well supported and the volume is easy to read.

⭐If you are actually a serious history buff -or an actual student of the history of this time period, this is an excellent work, I get a kick out of the people that claim many of these well-done books don’t provide a bunch of nonsense like “detailed information,” we simply don’t have as the author points out over and over,- the author is actually a real historian and informs the reader of these truths, WE AGAIN DON’T HAVE THESE KIND OF DETAILS. Sorry if this outstanding author didn’t write a game of thrones FICTIONAL REVIEW FOR YOU, or some other fictional nonsense to make you happy? This book is a Great work in my view as are his other works. Great read, great addition to any collection of actual Roman history. But no,- he doesn’t add in nonsense or information with no foundation. I highly recommend this author’s work and this book and others on Rome in particular. Outstanding work.

⭐I love Roman history, and this is a great little book on general Roman military history, tactics and organization. It follows the evolution of the Roman military through the periods of Monarchy – Republic – Empire. It contains a lot of great information and is a very easy read. The author doesn’t overwhelm with archaic terms or extraneous details. I also have ‘Caesar’ by Adrian Goldsworthy, which is also an excellent book specifically on Julius Caesar. I recommend this book for sure.

⭐I have read several books by Goldsworthy on Roman history, and have found them to be good popular (as opposed to academic) histories. Although well written, this book did not measure up to his others. The principal problem is that it feels superficial . Overly brief descriptions of campaigns are intermixed with equally short descriptions of tactics and organizations. There is never a feeling of depth of analysis for any of the topics raised.

⭐I found this book too much general . I’d expected a more indeep insight

⭐READ A LOT FROM THIS AUTHOR MUCH OF IT VERY INTERESTING – BIOS OF CAESAR, AUGUSTUS ARE REALLY GREAT! THIS DOESN’T COME ANYWHERE NEAR THEM TRIES TO COVER TOO MUCH GROUND IN TOO LITTLE SPACE RESULTING IN JUST FOOTNOTES FOR THE OTHER BOOKS. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

⭐For reference

⭐First of all I have most of Adrian Goldsworthy’s books and have enjoyed every one I’ve read. This however feels like a cash in to be honest. There’s nothing new in these pages that you couldn’t find in any of his other works. Granted the coverage of the very late empire was somewhat new to me but it wasn’t covered in very much detail. There is also a fair amount of repetition to be found. Various phrases or passages will be used, almost verbatim, several times within a chapter which makes it feel like the author was padding out the book. It’s quite a short book at just over 200 pages so you could get through it in a day or two and this would be a great introduction to Roman Warfare for someone newly interested in the subject.
