Description
These letters give an insight into the life of a writer whose novels continue to be bestsellers. They reveal much about Charlotte Bront:e’s personal life, her family relationships, and the society in which she lived. Many of her early letters are written with vigour, vivacity, and an engaging aptitude for self-mockery. In contrast, her letters to her “master”, the Belgian schoolteacher Constantin Heger, reveal her intense, obsessive longing for some response from him. Other letters are deeply moving, when Charlotte endures the agony of her brother’s and sisters’ untimely deaths. We learn also of the progress of her writing, including the astonishing success of Jane Eyre, and of her contacts with her publishers, including the young George Smith; and we recognize in her letters the life-experiences which are transmuted into the art of her novels. Contemporary society is brilliantly described in her letters from London, when she writes of her encounters with famous writers and with critics of her novels. We hear too of her visits to art galleries, operas, and the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace. Dramatic letters written in December 1852 convey the “turbulence of feeling” in the Haworth curate Arthur Nicholls’s proposal of marriage to her and in Mr Bront:e’s violent reaction to it; and we subsequently hear of her secret correspondence with her suitor, her father’s eventual consent, and her tragically brief happy marriage, cut short by her death in March 1855.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐The full 3 volume set of Charlotte Bronte letters can run you nearly a 1,000 dollars…and it’s well worth it. Yet here, for a fraction of that , you get the best of the best, edited by the same Margaret Smith who devoted many years to tracking down the actual letters and researching their references . I find Ms. Smith’s footnotes about who is who and what is what a joy . Her hard work has opened a treasure chest of English prose by a Master . Thank you Professor Smith!
⭐i have an E Reader, i do not want this book in paper form any longer.i can not review this, what a pain in the @$$ to have to do this just to get it off of my wish list on the pc.
⭐Sheds an intimate glow on the private and tragic life of Charlotte Bronte. We see her aspirations, fears, challenges, great love and caring for friends and family, and her very lofty and moral philosophical leanings. We see how Jane Eyre and her other compositions actually had their basis in sombre and harsh realityAn inspirational visit with a brave and beautiful soul
⭐This book is a collection of some of her letters written during her life, for example in reply to critics and friends. Each letter is fully explained by several notes which add more details about the content of the letter. At the end of the book there is an appendix with biographical notes (about critics and friends cited in the letters etc.) If you are writing a degree thesis on literature, this book could be used to explain Charlotte’s personality and deepen your own knowledge about her autobiography! This is a must-have!!!! VERY BEAUTIFUL FRONT-COVER!!! 😀
⭐I love everything to do with the Bronte’s and I am loving this book. The only small criticism I would give is that (I personally) thought that the ‘notes’ after every letter/article (which are very welcome and interesting , could be 3 pages long) would’ve been better placed () within the body of the letter or at the page end to save having to delve back and forward into the book. That’s probably due to my impatience but apart from that small item I am enjoying reading the letters and learning more about Charlotte & her family and friends.
⭐Came up to my expectations
⭐A great buy. I love Charlotte Bronte and was interested in reading more deeply into her mind. Sometimes it feels a bit intrusive as she didn’t mean these letters for public consumption but I’m glad they were preserved. Beautiful words, nice paper weight, easy to read font and layout, and nice cover.
⭐Expensive, considering that this is an old book whose extracts would be available on the internet.
