Description
Derived from the techniques of analytic number theory, sieve theory employs methods from mathematical analysis to solve number-theoretical problems. This text by a noted pair of experts is regarded as the definitive work on the subject. It formulates the general sieve problem, explores the theoretical background, and illustrates significant applications.”For years to come, Sieve Methods will be vital to those seeking to work in the subject, and also to those seeking to make applications,” noted prominent mathematician Hugh Montgomery in his review of this volume for the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society. The authors supply the theoretical background for the method of Jurkat-Richert and illustrate it by means of significant applications, concentrating on the “small” sieves of Brun and Selberg. Additional topics include the linear sieve, a weighted sieve, and Chen’s theorem.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
āgreat book for an interesting subject in mathematics, needs concentration and is not an easy read (even in math book standards). This book however is rewarding and contains adequate subject material. overall if interested in sieve methods after some online reading and need a good reference book and a somewhat challenging introduction to the subject book look no further. if you want a friendly introduction to the subject this i am afraid is not for you dear reader. have a good day everyone and remember read as many books as you can!!
ā…and out of the claws of Elsevier, no less. This book is the definitive classic on sieve methods, with clear presentation throughout, culminating in the proof of Chen’s theorem that for infinitely many primes p, p + 2 is either prime or a product of two primes. The modern reader will also want to read Friedlander and Iwaniec’s “Opera de Cribro”, which presents a more contemporary view of the subject with a lot of number of applications. Halberstam and Richert’s book is also excellent, especially the first few chapters which make for easier reading than F+I. Especially at this price, every analytic number theorist should buy it. I’m certainly going to.
āThe book is magisterial, of course, because the 1974 original is, but the Dover and ebook editions have copied the errata page verbatim from the original. I feel that I am more disappointed than I should be, but marking down accordingly.
āProdotto in ottime condizioni e pienamente rientrante nelle mie aspettative. Servizio impeccabile.Se fossero evitate alcune clausole obbligatorie nell’espressione del giudizio sarebbe molto meglio.
