Description

From the author of ‘Seven Wonders of the Industrial World’, another highly anticipated TV tie-in charting the shocking but true story behind the space race – and the ruthless, brilliant scientists who fuelled it.The end of the Cold War finally reveals a generation of secrets and cover-ups, bringing a historical opportunity: the unmasking of the true heroes and villains behind the biggest race of mankind. This is one of the greatest stories in world history, beginning in the bloody throes of the Second World War and spanning through to the moon landings. With the two superpowers pitched against one another during the Cold War, this is the race to create the most powerful rocket and dominate the world, culminating in 1969’s ‘giant leap for mankind’. The most pioneering and high-risk experiments ever undertaken cost untold millions – and hundreds of lives as mistakes were made, some too horrific to be made public. It is a tale that plays out against a backdrop of communism and espionage. Buried within this multi-million-dollar battle between nations are the dramatic accounts of the individuals whose passion to be the winner of this dream at any cost. With ex-Nazi Wernher von Braun on the American side pitted against the enigmatic Sergei Korolev on the Soviet side, this revealing new history shows the extent to which politics and personal ambition combined to create an explosive race for the glory of victory.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Deborah Cadbury does a exceptional job of telling this fantastic history . Second time I have read and it does not disappoint !

⭐Epic great read!!

⭐Although the American efforts that culminated in the successful Moon landings are certainly covered, the author devotes more time to the Soviet side of space exploration. This was a sound decision, given that there are many excellent accounts of the winning side but relatively few of the losing one. Yet there are many fascinating stories from behind what was the Iron Curtain – in particular, the extraordinary personal story of Sergei Korolev, the brilliant “Chief Designer” who was fated to remain in the shadows until well after his death. The author is clearly sympathetic to the man, and it’s hard not to share this view. There are numerous individual accounts of the astonishing years that saw the Space Race run its course, but this one definitely provides significant new insights. Highly recommended to all who enjoy reading about mankind’s quest for the stars.

⭐Absolutely brilliant. A fascinating and sometimes harrowing insight into the lives of these two men, without whom the space exploration we almost take for granted nowadays would not have developed. A view into a hidden part of history; if you have been captivated by Tim Peake’s voyage to the ISS, or previously Helen Sharman aboard MIR, definitely read this book – interesting and upsetting but really makes you appreciate what we have today.

⭐An excellent unpicking of the early years of the space race. Explains the science without being dry,and deals with the unsavoury aspects of where the tech’ came from. Very enjoyable book.

⭐An excellent book with very interesting facts, have always been interested in the space race, its really an eye opener for anyone who is unfamiliar with all the details and how it all developed from WWII, an excellent read if your interested

⭐An really interesting entertain read, one slight disappointment lack of pictures but worth the read , it Kept me entertained.
