Description

The New York Times bestselling memoir of the 27-year-old Boston Marathon bombing survivor and the basis of the major motion picture starring Jake Gyllenhaal. When Jeff Bauman woke up on Tuesday, April 16th, 2013 in the Boston Medical Center, groggy from a series of lifesaving surgeries and missing his legs, the first thing he did was try to speak. When he realized he couldn’t, he asked for a pad and paper and wrote down seven words: “Saw the guy. Looked right at me,” setting off one of the biggest manhunts in the country’s history. Just thirty hours before, Jeff had been at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon cheering on his girlfriend, Erin, when the first bomb went off at his feet. As he was rushed to the hospital, he realized he was severely injured and that he might die, but he didn’t know that a photograph of him in a wheelchair was circulating throughout the world, making him the human face of the Boston Marathon bombing victims, or that what he’d seen would give the Boston police their most important breakthrough. In Stronger, Jeff describes the chaos and terror of the bombing itself and the ongoing FBI investigation in which he was a key witness. He takes us inside his grueling rehabilitation, and discusses his attempt to reconcile the world’s admiration with his own guilt and frustration. . Brave, compassionate, and emotionally compelling, Jeff Bauman’s story is not just his, but ours as well.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The place is Boston; the date is April 15th 2013. The event is the 117th Boston Marathon as hundreds of runners and thousands of excited spectators line the 26-mile route through the Irish enclave of America. Among them is a young and outgoing 27-year-old Jeff Bauman who is eager to get a front row seat at the finish line to cheer for his girlfriend Erin, an experienced runner participating in the marathon. Amid the festive crowd, few notice two young men dressed in hoodies carrying back packs near the finish line on Boylston Street. Unknown to thousands of innocent people, the biggest event in “Bean Town” will be transformed into a day of terror. As a massive explosion rocks the finish line, Jeff Bauman’s world goes dark as both his limbs are blown off in the blast. After a second blast erupts the message is clear, Boston has become ground zero for a new wave of radical Islamic Terrorism. The twin blasts send shock waves through the city and stuns the world as ordinary people are thrust into an extraordinary situation and scramble to help the injured and the dying. Jeff Bauman is down for the count as family and friends rush to the hospital for what will be the beginning of one man’s arduous road back to recovery. That’s the premise behind the poignantly-moving memoir of strength and survival in “Stronger.” Here, the life and struggles of Jeff Bauman and his loved ones is recounted in a respectful and personal way giving the reader a glimpse of life before and after Boston’s darkest day. Through the daunting recovery process of being fitted with prosthetic limbs, to the relentless media attention of one man’s courage and resilience to be “Boston Strong,” and the outpouring love and support for one of many survivors who doesn’t see himself as anyone extra special; just an ordinary joe who wants to cherish a second chance at life after coming within seconds of having it literary blown away. I was lucky to find this book on Audible and after seeing the movie, I have to say that I enjoyed the Audiobook better than the film. Jake Gyllenhaal does a great job portraying Jeff Bauman on-screen but to hear the raw emotion and sincerity from the real Jeff Bauman is something truly remarkable. Not only is this gripping memoir a portrait of his second chance at life, it’s also an homage to those who were injured and lost on April 15th 2013. Jeff Bauman also gives a heartfelt thank you to the first responders and those in the trauma and rehab professions who literary got a diehard Boston Red Sox fan back on his feet. Well worth the time to read or listen.

⭐This is the amazing story behind “that picture” that we all saw on that awful day of the young man with his legs blown off by a bomb. I have no connection to the Boston Marathon or even to Boston, but like millions of others, i’m sure, i was heartbroken by the event and captivated particularly by Jeff and the hero Carlos who saved his life. (The story of Carlos is also heartbreaking). This book is written in a charming, easy style. You feel you know Jeff while reading this. I’m writing this review on the off chance that he himself will read his reviews here on Amazon. He is struggling to understand why everyone thinks he is a “hero”. I have often thought about why we make heroes out of victims of violence and terrorism, in particular. While reading his book, it came to me. They are heroes because the bombers are targeting all of us. He could have been my son, or husband. Any of them could have been our friends, wives or children. Any of us could have been these victims. Jeff represents the thousands or millions of people who could have been in his place instead. He and the other injured and dead took the brunt of the assault. He represents us all. He and the others suffered in our place, that makes him a hero. This is a book that gave me goose bumps, made me laugh, made me cry and left me feeling in awe.

⭐Would like to give this 4.5 stars; wish that Amazon gave the option. Being from the Boston area, I always wanted to learn more about Jeff’s experience after following his story on the news and on the internet. I started and almost finished the book on a flight from Boston to New Orleans (needed one night in the hotel to finish) and couldn’t put it down. Really interesting to learn about what rehab entails for an amputee, and all the challenges that would never occur to an outsider like me. Just amazing. I teared up at a few spots. Hope more people read this book as a lesson about human endurance. We all have a lot to learn from this guy and from the others who were senselessly injured- physically and emotionally- from the marathon bombing last year. Jeff does not portray himself as an angel, nor as a superhero whose progression moved steadily upwards. To me, this makes him all the more real- and it’s another reason why he represents the best of our great city. Reading this story makes me proud to call myself a Bostonian. All the best to Bauman, who is now indeed Stronger.

⭐I bought this book after I saw Jeff on several television shows. This is an absolutely compelling story. As a rehabilitation nurse I have seen people who succeed and those that unfortunately do not. The speed of Jeff’s recovery time is phenomenal and his characterizations of the others in the story is excellent. The man with the cowboy hat, the police and all the Bostonians who assisted him were endearing. This is not a medical story but a real story about how families, spouses and entire communities deal with what life throws at them. I must say that a cried but not of sadness but because of all the wonderful people and Jeff’s determination to walk. I was inspired by the fact that he did not blame anyone. Excellent read and it makes you feel like you know him when you see him on a talk show. I wish him the best. Would like to see the movie but will probably wait for DVD so I can shed my happy tears at home.

⭐I had my doubts when I ordered this book: But it is not a propaganda against biography…oh no ! It is a wonderful fantastic book that we are stronger..stronger than hate..stronger even if we suffer such terrible events..as Jeff or others! I hope it will be translated in any language as OUR message against hate and terror! And also as a motivation for all those who suffer like me from a handicap due to violence! I read it in one afternoon..and it’s a fantastic gift for all those whom you want to offer ..something that makes sense! I do not make any spoiler…just…a warning..it might make you forget your cooking, your cookies, your duties…because it is breathtaking!

⭐Gives the true story of how fate brings people into extreme circumstances. Written with simple honesty and gives the reader an insight to the mental and physical strength needed to overcome a new disability. An easy and informative read which makes you realise how important strong relationships are. Do not watch the film. It has little relationship to the book.

⭐Incredible that this guy survived, let alone walked again just a year after the accident. The film features a lot more stress and angry frustration/rows than the book does, though. I wonder why?

⭐I have loved this book from start to finish, for a man so horificaly wounded to then become so Boston strong and be an inspiration to all is amazing. I would love to meet Jeff Bauman as he has helped me as I am suffering from a breakdown, this has inspired me to be strong and carry on with my own personal recovery. What an inspiring read. WOW

⭐I bought this after hearing Jeff on BBC radio 2. The style of writing reflects the man – it’s clear, honest, self deprecating, reflective and scattered with colloquialisms and sporting references.
