Description
Structural colorations originate from self-organized microstructures, which interact with light in a complex way to produce brilliant colors seen everywhere in nature. Research in this field is extremely new and has been rapidly growing in the last 10 years, because the elaborate structures created in nature can now be fabricated through various types of nanotechnologies. Indeed, a fundamental book covering this field from biological, physical, and engineering viewpoints has long been expected.Coloring in nature comes mostly from inherent colors of materials, though it sometimes has a purely physical origin such as diffraction or interference of light. The latter, called structural color or iridescence, has long been a problem of scientific interest. Recently, structural colors have attracted great interest because various photonic architectures, now developing in modern technologies, have been spontaneously created in the self-organization process and have been extensively used as one of the important visual functions. In this book, the fundamental optical properties underlying structural colors are explained, and these mysteries of nature are surveyed from the viewpoint of biological diversity and according to their sophisticated structures. The book proposes a general principle of structural colors based on the structural hierarchy and presents up-to-date applications.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review The writing is clear, sophisticated and professional, but at the same time personal and accessible … this book really is comprehensive, presenting basic background information, detailed descriptions of the systems and of the techniques used to study them, and challenges and opportunities for future directions of research and study. –Helen Ghiradella, Professor of Biological Sciences, PhD, University of California, Santa Barbara

⭐Kinoshita is a prominent physicist in the field of structural colouration (particularly butterflies), and in ‘structural colors in the realm of nature’ he attempts what is essentially a book-length review. As such, it is targeted more towards grad students and researchers, or the extremely interested lay-reader.On the whole it’s a decent resource, with a couple of chapters on the underlying mathematics and a species-by-species overview of structural colouration mechanisms – focusing on butterflies, beetles, fish and birds. As is often the case in these works, the reference list is particularly useful and there is an excellent appendix listing (by species) all the studies of structural colouration in butterflies. The main failing is the woeful writing/editing, which makes reading this otherwise interesting work a real chore. I’m not a pedant when it comes to writing style but the text is littered with missing plurals, unnecessary commas, and clunky sentences that force you to stop and re-read just to understand the author’s point. For example; “The various colored lepidopteran species, whose wings are covered with mosaic tapestry of scales, are one of the most extensively studied insects from an optical aspect, such as pigmentary and structural colorations, visual mechanisms, antireflection effects on ommateum and wing, and so on.” pp. 43It’s a nice review of a fascinating field, but the poor writing/editing and the excessive price mean you’re probably better off simply tracking down a few of the more readable (and much cheaper) review papers out there.
