⭐Having read several other works by McCarthy, I did not expect an uplifting morality tale or a happy ending, and I was not disappointed. He delivers a picturesque panorama of Southern river lowlife with just enough distance from the characters portrayed to keep the dirt off your hands while reading. As in his other books, the narrative ends on a hanging note of disillusionment but not quite despair – at least that was my take on it.

⭐Book arrived quickly and in great condition

⭐This novel is quite different from his border trilogy and its more difficult to read.

⭐Having grown up in the Knoxville area, I remember some the characters in this book. This one of mccarthys best books and I’ve read them all.

⭐Being a fan of McCarthy’s other offerings I look forward to reading Suttree. What a rambling, aimless collection of events. I struggled through a third of the book but decided finishing it was not worth my time. Very disappointing and completely different from outer McCarthy book I have read.

⭐Not sure how this edition is different from the one that looks exactly the same – the one with over 200 reviews. So – potential purchasers should also look at those reviews. In my opinion this is an absolutely fantastic book, McCarthy’s best – and he’s America’s best living novelist. The language in Suttree is as brilliant as Blood Meridian, but there is a plot and a character that will eventually matter to you. I’m not giving anything away, plot-wise, to quote the books last short paragraph: “Somewhere in the gray wood by the river is the huntsman and in the brooming corn and in the castellated press of cities. His work lies all wheres and his hounds tire not. I have seen them in a dream, slaverous and wild and their eyes crazed with ravening for souls in this world. Fly them.” Wow. Simply wow.

⭐I like McCarthy but not this book. The narrative flows from poetic description into storytelling, then back and forth between the two throughout. I like the gritty, action-packed storytelling McCarthy better. The writing style and ‘poetry’ in this book is very interesting but is tedious and made me want to sleep or just plain put it down.

⭐Suttree is an amazing book, but this was in FRENCH don’t know why it is being sold on amazon.uk with little warning that it is French. The writing at the bottom is in French and maybe I should have been more observant, I just saw Cormac McCathy and Suttree, how about a big FRENCH EDITION if you are selling it on an english speaking book site. I am giving this five stars because the book, which I went off and I got in the library, is one of the best books I have read. It is Southern Gothic at its best, full of weird characters and beautiful heady prose thought oft times the landscape is seen through a fecal coloured lens. It is hilarious at times but also gloomy and mystopic.

⭐Superb book, fantastic writer. Yet the seller is proposing a soft cover item, still priced less than 8 euros (printed price on the cover) at a + £20.Wow I felt fooled when I opened the parcel.

⭐Je suis démuni pour parler de ce livre. Il y a un tas de mots que je n’ai pas compris. Suttree de Cormac est un livre qui se mérite, un peu comme certains films de Malick, La plume du grand Mac est telle un pinceau prenant son temps sur la toile, là où une phrase suffirait pour décrire un vol d’oiseaux lui en fait des caisses. ici on est loin de Kerouac et de ses petites ballades peinardes sur la route avec son pote quoi qu’il se passe maman est là qui lui enverra un mandat.Ici c’est l’Amérique des paumés, tout au bord de Knoxville vivent les parias, les exclus volontaires ou non du système, il y a des putes, des alcolos, des mendiants, des aveugles, des noirs des blancs, ça se bagarre, ça picole, ça survit.Il y a de temps en temps des rencontres fortuites, des belles voitures, des chambres pourries à 5 $ la semaine lorsque que l’hiver est trop rude et que la rivière gèle, il y a des petites combines le café, le coca arrosé de whisky frelaté, le poêle de l’épicerie autour duquel se retrouve cette cour des miracles.Je pourrais en dire encore et encore tant ce roman est riche, beau, superbement écrit, Cormac est un génie, ceux qui aiment Céline peuvent se jeter dessus, je le déconseille à ceux qui aiment la littérature qui se laisse lire toute seule.Livre orageux comme l’auteur, dense, fouillé.Une fois qu’on a lu un roman de cet auteur, impossible de ne pas continuer à lire ses autres ouvrages.Ce que j’ai fait. De la vraie littérature, une admirable traduction aussi.Jamais déçue, et toujours bien “remuée” après chaque lecture.Ce qu’il y a de bien c’est que C. MacCarthy n’écrit pas pour les nunuches, comme malheureusement la grande majorité des écrivains français le font…Les femme sont pas toutes idiotes !!Pourtant capable de lire des choses difficiles autant par le thème que par la forme, j’ai trouvé la lecture de ce livre très laborieuse : succession de mots obligeant à recourir au dictionnaire, des phrases sans verbes qui perdent le lecteur, des descriptions à l’infini d’un environnement “glauquissime” qui donne la nausée au sens propre du terme… j’ai, pour la première fois de ma vie, laissé tomber la lecture de cet ouvrage ! Sans doute n’ai-je pas su apprécier un auteur manifestement consacré. Tant pis !
