User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book collects a series of short stories in the mystery genre, rather than SF and I love them. They’re a little bit formulaic, but the characters have such great personalities I don’t care. I love the characters. This is the first in a series and it includes author notes after each short story to give a little insight into the writing process.I wish all the black widowers stories would be re-issued into new editions (or kindle books), but in the meantime, I’ll grab the used copies anytime I see them. This used copy had some notes on the last couple of pages, but they were fantastic – it was obviously someone’s menu for a book club discussion about this book, and it fits the theme of the book perfectly. Loved it.

⭐Who doesn’t love Henry the wonder waiter? If you are unfamiliar with this series, the books are comprised of short mystery stories. The story is told in the presence of the Black Widowers, an intellectuals’ dinner club. in the end, it is Henry, the waiter, that inevitably solves the case. Most of the cases revolve around one or two specialized pieces of information that most readers would not casually know. In the end, the reader is entertained and learns something new. These stories were written in the early 1970’s, so be prepared for some outdated technology. For those who have grown up alongside computers and cell phones, these stories will give you a glimpse into pre-web days. Enjoy!

⭐Book was purchased as a gift and arrived in very good condition. Recipient was very happy to add to collection.

⭐Book was in very good condition when it arrived.

⭐the print was smaller than I hoped for but it was what I ordered. the condition was just ok but i am ok with it. I would like to own a copy with larger print. it arrived on time and i am happy about that because I am still waiting on “Banquets of the Black Widows” and afraid it may not come!

⭐loved it

⭐Ordered this as a present for my father in law and he loved it. Arrived in pretty good shape wth no tears or markings in the book.

⭐Thoroughly entertaining and intriguing stories. Some of my favorite mysteries.

⭐I’m an Asimov fan, but this is very minor Asimov. An all-male dining club (the Black Widowers of the title) meets to discuss and solve puzzles presented by a series of guests. After they have ventured various clever and complicated opinions, each puzzle is solved by the waiter, Henry. The puzzles are feeble little things, and the stories that generate them are laboriously contrived in order to generate a “water-tight” problem that resists the efforts of the Black Widowers. Henry’s definitive solution generates more of a sense of “Is that all?” rather than forehead-slapping revelation. The Black Widowers themselves are obviously intended to be an engaging bunch, and Asimov spends a lot of time on their repartee. To a man, they’re either tediously unpleasant or unpleasantly tedious. To actually dine with them would be ghastly. It makes one glad never to have been a member of the Trap Door Spiders, the dining club of which Asimov was a member, and which formed the basis for the Black Widowers.

⭐Shortness of stories – crime rather than Sci Fi

⭐More tales of the black widowersFor a second hand book it’s ok – obviously it’s a used copy but bought it for the story not quality of book

⭐It arrived

⭐Great
