Description

This well-thought-out text, filled with many special features, is designed for a two-semester course in calculus for technology students with a background in college algebra and trigonometry. The author has taken special care to make the book appealing to students by providing motivating examples, facilitating an intuitive understanding of the underlying concepts involved, and by providing much opportunity to gain proficiency in techniques and skills.Initial chapters cover functions and graphs, straight lines and conic sections, new coordinate systems, the derivative, using the derivative, integration and using the integral. The last four chapters focus on derivatives of transcendental functions, patterns for integrations, series expansion of functions, and differential equations.Throughout, the writing style is clear, readable and informal. Examples are abundant and have complete worked solutions. Practice problems appear in the body of the text in each section; these are relatively easy and are intended to be worked by the student as soon as they are encountered. Each new type of example in the text is followed by a practice problem that allows the student to gain immediate reinforcement in applying the problem-solving technique illustrated by the example. Answers to all practice problems are given at the back of the book, many with worked-out solutions.Other learning aids include the division of complex problem-solving processes into a series of step-by-step tasks, numerous exercises at the end of each section and a Status Check at the end of each chapter that helps students review what they have learned. Additional review exercises and a glossary, with definitions and page references, round out the book.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is one of the best self-study calculus textbooks I have come across. The layout and presentation is geared to the non-math major. As such proofs etc are as background. The emphasis is on the technical college student and thus most of the book is of the how-to-solve genre. This is great because it gives one a sense of success and self confidence early on instead of getting bogged down in theory.I waded through this book while simultaneously going through a pre-calculus textbook and this combo helped greatly. Therefore if you have been away from calculus for a long time and want to get back into it this is an excellent textbook to get you going quickly and succinctly. A suggestion – after reviewing a topic, say differentiation, go through the same in another excellent self study book, “Engineering Mathematics” by K. A. Stroud. At this price this is a must-have for anyone just getting into calculus or wishing to get back into the calc groove after a long hiatus.

⭐I agree with the previous reviewer that it is surpising that no one else has reviewed this book. It’s terrific.I had two semesters of calculus about 15 years ago. I did very well, but I wanted to brush up. This book has been ideal. It covers the basics of analytic geometry, differential and integral calculus, and ends with a chapter on differential equations.I believe it would also be ideal for someone trying to teach himself. It is very friendly, and there are _lots_ of problems: examples, practice problems, and exercises. Answers are given to all practice problems and odd-numbered exercises.I sort of doubt I’m getting the depth or breadth of my two college semesters, but I think this is a solid and user-friendly place to start.

⭐None of the reviews here are exaggerating in the least. This is the book engineering majors should learn calculus from, instead of the steamer trunk sized tomes usually required.Enough algebraic exposition to show how, for example, derivatives or Taylor series are developed, to give one confidence and understanding without all the interminably obfuscating rigorous detail required of mathematics majors. You’ll put this volume down working real problems quickly and confidently! And, yes, the owls are Puppy-Bowl cute.P.S I wrote this on 31 January, 2014. Not in 2009, as the date indicates.

⭐I agree with the other reviews about this book. I’ve been out of school for many years yet I used this book to prepare for the math content found on the engineer-in-training exam and I passed. I wish when I took calculus the first time in school that the teacher used this book. Gersting not only explains the subject matter well but also provides clear examples. Add to this it is excellent as a self-study book. I recommend it for anyone wanting to review the subject and also as a reference for those struggling in a traditional calculus classes.

⭐The author has explained the subject in a very concise way. She does what a truly good math-writer (actually any writer) should, which is to try to show you clearly how simple the concept really is, instead of talking in circles about things until you are more confused than when you began. The only improvement i could think of to this book is that i would like a few worked out examples to the actual exercises-but she does give enough examples in the lessons themselves to cover everything you need to know.

⭐Clearly written, one of the better introductory calculus books. This book has an informal voice and stresses the concepts with many detailed examples. I like this book, done with the beginner in mind.

⭐Excellent to learn how to do calculus. Very few, if any proofs are presented, but it has numerous examples & will assure that you are proficieint at problem solving.

⭐This is how a calculus book should be written. Straight to the point! This is not s “for-profit” textbook.

⭐ok
